Dan almost didn't forgive Gump for saving his life because Gump deprived him of his rightful glory, such glory earned merely by doing what every person ultimately does, die.
By the way, let me ask you a question that's been troubling me about your narrative. If you knew you had a self-inflicted injury which might keep you for following Lt. Dan off a cliff and if you knew that it might complicate you getting in the Marines and living the life of and gaining the death of Lt. Dan of Forest Gump fame, WHY THE HELL DID YOU TELL THE MARINES ABOUT IT IN THE FIRST PLACE?
Wouldn't it have been more in keeping with your desire for a glorious death in combat to just keep it to yourself and put up with the pain no matter how bad it got? I just don't get that part.
Please clear that up for me. I'm sure there's a logical explanation that we'd all like to hear.
