Here to Learn.....
From way north of the DMZ. I'm very new to this game as the season will be only my second year. Been to a couple of seminars during the winter and looking to learn as much as I can. I'll try to contribute whatever I can in the mean time. My hat's off to all that are here to teach. It's a wonderful thing! Just a little history...born and raised a NC boy originally from the ROCK. Spent a little time on Marty's home waters a long, long time ago. But now I'm ready to really get serious here in the beautiful waters and canyons off Montauk and Block Island Sound. Been here for the past 15 years. Got the boat, got the gear, now need to get the most important of all......the knowledge. Let's get it started!! |

Why do plastics get a bad rap?
It's FAKE Isn't it enough to fool a fish to eat something that is not from their world? I use both meat and artificial and for the life of me can't figure out what the big deal is. Whatever results in a dead bled Tuna I am all for whether it's meat, plastic or metal. Looking out at my deck with another 6" of snow is getting me testy, sorry. |

better mood
I just use what works for me. For whatever reason in the greener northern water green machines and spreaders work well. So do seawitches and nakeds. For northern early season eddy Yellowfins I like to start out with triple spreaders on short rigger and short center, with seawitches on flats and short short riggers all around each spreader. Long riggers get a Hawaiian Eye/Horse and a rivet head no weight bally, center long bird/green. If they eat the spreader i give them 2 more to chew on. If the bird/gm gets eaten then another gm finds its way out there as well as the gm spreader. If after 2 hours or so of marking bait but no surface bites the shovel goes over. I like Capt. Brians idea of finding bait and sitting on it and attacking from every angle - never leave bait to find bait
inshore fishing 20 fathoms or less i always put out inverted daisy chain tiny weighted jetheads and leadheads (3" long - kinda like a mini-me Tuna Clone) and cedars, because there are so many sand eels around. Early Bluefins up north i like big baits on Hawaiian Eyes, SeaStars and horse nakeds. Since this is usually an inshore deal cedars and the lead heads as well Whatever is caught i like to find out what they are eating and match the hatch if possible. Might not be A-1 approved but over 20 years it has caught a few fish |

I for one am sure glad you are here. Your contributions are fantastic and I look forward to catching up and being a regular.
I have a lot to learn about BFT. We have them over here on the West Coast and I plan on being one of the rare boats to bring in a COW! Its gonna happen... Old Salty of Old Salty Planers pointed me this way... I am glad he did.. |
