Mariner im going to have to disagree. Im going to say more billfish are caught on dead baits than on plastic. Unless we are talking about Hawaii or the North Drop of St. Thomas but as for here on the good old East Coast from Florida to Maine its dead baits. Blue marlin i might pull a plastic or two but as far as whites its totally naked, naked, naked. Tuna fishing with plastics work well, spreader bars, cedar plugs and green machines. If just doing well is ok then i would be satisfied fishing that way. I did that for ten years of my life. One trip to N.C. fishing ballyhoos for tuna and catching 18 in 2 hours that cured me from pulling plastic forever. I believe a properly rigged spread of ballys will out fish a spread of plastic any day. Its just my opinion and if it wasnt for fishing in N.C. i would still be pulling plastic. So one day try switching you never know i might make a believer out of you yet. good luck and remeber always have a pitch bait ready.

Kevin,
Thanks for the link.
I will be alternatively pulling plastics on some days meat on others this Summer until one method or the other proves to be more productive in our (WAY North of the DMZ) lattitudes.Joe you and Marty have MANY years of experience in your tips thank you both and can't wait till you come down and fish w/me to tune your plastic spread, give me a days notice and I'll make some Jerky. What is our first video Marty?

It seems like there is a group of guys here with a following. So I'm assuming that there may be some good ideas about to brew here. So I say we take the gloves off and see what can get started here.

Why do you guys use natural baits. THey are more work to set up and prepare, they stink, some are no good, you have to use salt product, bla bla bla...so why deal with it.

Why shouldn't I just unwrap my bullet feathers with a factory leader off the coil and hook it to my 50 and off I go! After fishing I just wrap it back up and then a simple rinse with the hose at the dock and then I'm done. No work!

Oh shit I forgot something!!! After dealing with all that work using naturals then I have to fillet all those damn fish and clean all the blood off the deck and dock!! WHY because you get out of fishing what you put in to it. Theres a reason cow bass are caught on bait, breader reds are landed on bait, tourny winning tunas are caught on bait not to mentions on chunks, small mouth records fall to crawfish... you see my trend here. Fish eat artificials but they LOVE gods creations. So I'm gonna learn this offshore naturals gig to full capacity!! No matter what it takes.

I vote NATURALS!

NOW I KNOW YOU CAN CATCH FEESCH ON ANY OL BLISTER PACK LURE.........THIS IS A NO BRAINER, BUT MY PURPOSE HERE IS TO HELP PRESERVE THE FADING ,DYING ARTFORM OF NATURAL BAIT RIGGING...........AND NATURAL BAIT RIGGING IS ALSO COMBINED WITH AND ARTIFICIAL PREFACE LURE....IF ONE SO DESIRES..........

Lets clear the air waves not everyone above the DMZ is affected. There are very few of us that arent, not many, but a few. There is a cure for this deadly virus its cost about $1200. You have to be in the right spot just before sunlight. "Cover Up" spread no less than 12 rods, all connected ballyhoos. Some with "Extreme Measures Death From Above" hand tied blue and crystal seawitches, some naked. Its not going to be "THERE HE IS ON THE GREEN MACHINE" followed by rods being cleared then the sound of one fish being thrown into the fish box, and bunch of high fives and hand shaking. Its going to be "THERE HE IS LEFT LONG, RIGHT SHORT, BOTH FLAT LINES, OH SHIT WE HAVE TEN ON." Then you hear one fish hit the deck and one rod being set back in place. The second fish hitting the deck and another rod being set back out. This continues and dosent stop, untill Wahoo says ok Beast the box is full we have our limit lets go catch "The Man In The Blue Suit. Ok done deal Im cured of lure fishing forever, or untill I go to the north drop in August or Hawaii in the winter. Im not a believer in bait or plastic. I can only speak for what has worked best for me. As long as you believe in your self and that what you are doing works, you will be sucessful. Ok right now my picture is going on a wanted poster from Virgina to Maine.

meat or plastic how about both

hey pitch let me throw you a curve . the only nonmeat rig I pull is a green machine . on EVERTHING else I have a brined & properly rigged bally ready for something to come chew . yes I have been covered up with yfts and it is a sight to see when you can't keep bait in the water longer than 2 mins without a hookup. . I have had 70lb yfts on top behind the boat while chunking the canyons and only stopped to count the meat-in-box to make sure we were not over the limit. the one thing I have learned out of all of it is have a plan and stick with it . if you planned to fish a certain area stick with your plan and don't be afraid to try new things and new areas . learn by your mistakes and before anyone touchs a rod or bait have who is going to do what in the pit when the bite starts .

In my opnion

Hey skirt you are right,
In my opnion, and Im not a captain, when we get bites the first thing the captains should do is turn into the fish and start heading back to the mark. Let those inside baits sink down and the outside baits speed up like oh shit we better get out of here. You never know which ones they are goign to eat. If they eat the ones on the out side in the next turn take your inside baits and start cranking and speed then up alittle, and vise versa. Its like a giant figure 8 pattern on top of your mark. You get the fish on the inside of your circle, the anglers are cranking hard and the fish are there in no time. There is no need to stop the boat unless it is a big fish, use your semi down time while you are fighting the fish to return to the mark where you had your first bites. Another key is to keep resetting your lines as you hook up. You will be supprised at how many fish you hook as you are dropping back a new bait. In the world of white marlin where he or she loves a bait just laying in the water and you have a fish on, and there is a perfectly rigged naked medium bally fresh off the stainless bait tray laying in the water as you freespool it into position. Watch out, if there are two there you have a really good chance that he is goign to eat that one you are putting back out. All this sounds so smooth on the computer, but to have it run smooth in the cockpit is key. The key is to functionalize a disfunctional situation.
