Weather Windows
I do have a great job. Wonderful boat and best boss a guy could want... After wrecking myself 12/7 litterally since June bringing this ol girl to '09 class the last thing I want to do is beat her up getting her back to Florida... So much goes into the decision making process... She sits- her bottom gets dirtier. Not end of the world because we use ablative paint and she'll clean off in a couple hours... The other thing that creeps in is she gets tight and moving her straight into rough from sitting historically has caused stuff to break. So I really don't want to push it comming out of the gate. Then comes another part of the job. I owe it to my boss to not only get it south with a minimum of damage but I also need to take dockage and other road expenses into consideration. Bottom line is I need two days to get from where we dock to Norfolk. After that I can go slow in the ditch or outside weather permitting. Getting that two day window though is being problematic. For example: I have Friday looking like it would be nice to get to Ocean City. Saturday though throws twenty knots on my bow and it may be only 100 miles to the bay that would be really more than I want to put her through. Don't know at this point what lies beyond Saturday... Could have to sit in OC in an expensive slip twiddling thumbs for several more days... So do I push it? Get to OC and chance a long sit or do I just remain calm and go when a two day window opens up? Lets hear what some of your thoughts are here...

Why not just 10 knot it and get to where you're going?
Get someone else licensed to go with you (that won't fall asleep on their watch). Your range will dramatically increase, you won't beat the boat up, and you'll save a ton of fuel for your boss in the process. You'll also get to your final destination a hell of a lot faster in the overall picture, and your crew cost (even for another licensed capt) will be as minimal as it can get. 10 knotting it in the dark isn't a big deal if you are awake/aware and put your radar to work. |

Tab down isn't an isssue and she stays glued pretty good in the roughest of slop. The issue I get with this boat is water... I can't think of much that gets as wet as she does...
We just installed a polycarbonate enclosure with some really tight seals . Should do the trick but as yet un tested. Then I often run into a real pain in the scuppers with the wet. Our slip in Jersey gets pretty rough and a lot of current. We smack mecilessly up a padded piling. The padding stops much of the damage but I have noticed that even 5200 caulk along the rub rail gets worked and inevitably we get some area where it seperates and water finds its way in. Soggy bunks suck. Then we have the fishbox that slowly fills from the deluges... She's hooked up to macerator whos switch is engine room so no auto pump there. Couple hundred gallons in there and she gets ass heavy... Lifts the bow and I start to get back to burning fuel and even slapping a bit... Dave your idea is not a bad one at all... She cavitates and drags though between 8.5 and about 17 knots... We're looking at that for comming north next year. PBI to Morehead straight hitching a ride with the stream. I can get 8.5 or maybe 9 without busting her hump... Theres a sweetspot she has at about 1750 rpm that will get me anywhere between 18.5 and 23 knots that she burns hardly any fuel. Gotta play with the tabs to get her to stay on top but that could be an option too. Last edited by Deep C; 10-26-2009 at 10:18 PM. |

Why not do it in 1 day?
Shouldn't take you 2 days to get to Norfolk should it? I leave Manasquan at 7am & I'm in my slip in Rudee by 3pm. I'm sure you could leave the Navesink an hour or so earlier & make the same time. 65nm down the beach early the next morning & you're in OI & can take the inside all the way down. Or you could go up around the corner if you really wanted to take the inside. Plus Rudee is a cheap slip ($2/ft) if you got stuck there. I would think stopping in OC you're there before lunchtime & wasting 1/2 a day you could be running?

We're way up the Shrewsbury... It takes a bit over an hour with the bridges to the hook then another half hour just to get back even with the boss's house. Its more like 2 and change to squan from our slip. So its about seven total to OC.
Then we have our fuel limitations... This boat sucks it bad. I have to figure on just short of sixty an hour. Here lies a problem with range. This boat was built during a tough period at Viking. She's officially '96 but we had original parts from 94, 95, 96, and 97 in her. Like she was pieced together with stuff laying around. The biggie is that Viking themselves have no idea what tank went in her. Was supposed to be a 600 but may have been 585, 525, or worse yet 490. I have to go on assumption with 490 as guage reads near empty at 450 down. That gives me 205NM safe range. A fuel stop at OC adds just over an hour and another four or five to Norfolk now cuts that safe daylight window out. At our next haul I plan to go in real light and do a tank clean. I'll then know how much we sucked out and can fill and know once and for all what we carry. We're looking at repower next year and new mills would burn about 42gph. If I had the full six hundred and that burn Norfolk or beyond would be safe range with no problem. For now though I have to play it real safe. We have replaced most everything except power in her at this point... Too much sweat and labor tied up to risk hurting her just moving. Boss understands its a boat and stuff will break but would rather break it doing something important like fishing a tournament rather than just delivering.

Ouch 60/hr in a 43' express? I burn 70/hr at 28-29 knots in a 50' flybridge. Around 550 gal to Rudee. Dunno just doesn't seem like it should take 2 days to get that boat from Jersey to VA. Should be around 250nm from the hook. 10 hours at 25 knots plus your river & fuel stop. How bout just leaving a little earlier? Pull out by 4-5am, in OC for fuel by 11-12 & into VB by 5. VBFC will fuel you whatever time you get there. U ain't askeered of the dark are ya? Or I guess you could wait & do it in 2 half days...

We did it in reverse comming up. It was about 11 1/2 hrs dock to dock. That was with clean bottom ideal conditions and daylight to burn... Up in the bay somebody decided it would be good to lay out a couple hundred snail pots complete with styro balls and polly pro, just like the lobster traps in the keys. That and all the lumber that floats out of that east river makes dark running pretty iffy. Two years in a row my buddy with the Luhrs I sometiomes borrow, hit sub surface stuff bad enough to not only wreck wheels but struts and shafts too.
Looking right now hard at Sunday go... The two day go also gives me a shot at making Coinjock on that second day... Quick easy into Morehead next day and possibly as far as Wrightsville... Last edited by Deep C; 10-27-2009 at 07:31 PM. |
