Sit down Shut up And fish
We survived....somehow!
Copy and paste I saw somewhere. Enjoy-oldtimers!!!!!
We survived....somehow!
First, we survived being born to mothers who
smoked and/or drank while they carried us.
They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna
from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.
Then after that trauma, our beds were covered
with bright colored lead-based paints.
We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles,
doors or cabinets and when we rode our
bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention,
the risks we took hitchhiking.
As children, we would ride in cars
with no seat belts or air bags.
Riding in the back of a pick-up on a warm day was
always a special treat.
We drank water from the garden hose
and NOT from a bottle!
We shared one soft drink with four friends, from
one bottle and NO ONE
actually died from this.
We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter
and drank soft drinks with sugar in it, but
we weren't overweight because
WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!
We would leave home in the morning and play
all day, as long as we were back
when the streetlights came on..
No one was able to reach us all day.
And we were O.K.
We would spend hours building our go-carts out
of scraps and then ride down
the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes.
After running into the
bushes a few times,
we learned to solve the problem.
We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's,
X-boxes, no video games at all, no
99 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no
surround sound, no cell phones, no personal
computers, no Internet or Internet chat
rooms..........WE HAD FRIENDS and we went
outside and found them!
We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and
teeth and there were no lawsuits from these
accidents.
We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and
the worms did not live in us forever.
We were given slingshots for our 10th birthdays,
made up games with sticks and tennis balls and
although we were told it would happen, we did
not put out very many eyes.
We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and
knocked on the door or rang
the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!
Under 12 football had tryouts and not everyone
made the team. Those who didn't
had to learn to deal with disappointment.
Imagine that!!
The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke
the law was unheard of.
They actually sided with the law!
This generation has produced some of the best
risk-takers, problem solvers
and inventors ever!
The past 50 years have been an
explosion of innovation and new ideas.
We had freedom, failure, success and
responsibility, and we learned
HOW TO
DEAL WITH IT ALL!
And YOU are one of them!
CONGRATULATIONS!
You might want to share this with others who
have had the luck to grow up as
kids, before the lawyers and the government
regulated our lives for our own good.
and while you are at it, forward it to your kids so
they will know how brave their parents were.
Kind of makes you want to run through the
house with scissors, doesn't it?

Yep, that's me at 53, can relate to just about everything. BUT, when I look at my Dad who is struggling at 85, taught me everything, always had time, was my fishing buddy, knew more about fishing the Tangier Sound than just about anyone and served under General Patton in the Battle of the Bulge, that era can't hold a candle to his. And it's just getting worse. But, it was nice to read and reminisce. Thanks

You know when I was younger my sisters and I fought ... I don't mean just pulling hair I mean fist, bloody noses and bruises. The only thing my Mom would say is "Take it outside girls".
Now they say you should not let your kids fight
How in the world are you gonna take up for yourself in the world if you don't learn to fend off your sibilings?
I am not saying I will get into a fist fight with someone now, but I know how to take up for myself when I need to, all thanks to my older sisters

We all survived because we took some serious A$$ beatings. When "we" asked why to one of the parents the reply was simple ...."because I said so"
If more of today's kids toted some whippings we would not have to deal with all these young punks running around threatening to sue parents and talking back wanting an explanation when asked "why do I have to do that". Also, we got spanked in class at school, why? because we misbehaved, pure and simple.
These younger generations need some serious discipline. They need to know that there are consiquences that they will face before they decide to screw up!! Once they get all this......you guessed it we got to do all that was listed above because a priviliege was earned by learning how to be responsible.

No no no you guys are violent! Mean mean people!
You must practice "Time Out" and also explain to your child exactly why you are telling them to do something so they will understand the reason and decide whether they will/will not obey. You must also reason with them every chance you get and let them make their own decisions at 5 years old, and .....and......
My god, if I ever disobeyed my parents, it was a backhand! "Because I said so" worked for me! They were the parents, you DID NOT question them! If they said so, it was good enough for me! I was the child, they were the adults, period.
I referred to neighbors as Mr. and Mrs. so-and-so, not Nancy and Jack!
I never THOUGHT about playing ball on my neighbors yards, let alone cutting across their lawns!
I also never sat in the house after school...when mom said "Go out and play, I'll call you for dinner", I went outside and played! TV-time and Atari 2600 times were limited LOL.
When I was a kid, if you did crappy in school you STAYED BACK! That was enough to scare you into doing well! And in high school, there WERE different levels (Phase 1 thru 5) of classes, depending on your learning ability. NOT EVERYONE WAS FORCED INTO COLLEGE PREP
People WERE allowed to choose to go into vocational programs vs. college prep.
There was no such thing as ADD or ADHD!!!!!!
Today everything is blamed on some sort of manufactured "disorder"

I still to this day say "yes ma'am, no ma'am and yes sir, no sir" I feel that if I don't some magical hand will come from out of the blue and pop me, not on the butt but on that meaty part of the thigh just below the butt and above the back of the knee. Mom use to carry a bit bat paddle in her purse. You know the one that has the string and rubber band ball attached, first thing she would do was cut the string off and put it in her purse. Yeah we had to respect ALL peoples property and everything.
But my brother and I were both very serious little boys growing up we got into everything and anything that was not nailed down. But we got beat plenty of times though with no REAL side effects. However, I stll get this funny head jerk/twitch reaction and my upper thigh and face cheek get sore when I go outside and forget to put my coat on.
