You must also reason with them every chance you get and let them make their own decisions at 5 years old, and .....and......

My god, if I ever disobeyed my parents, it was a backhand! "Because I said so" worked for me! They were the parents, you DID NOT question them! If they said so, it was good enough for me! I was the child, they were the adults, period.

I referred to neighbors as Mr. and Mrs. so-and-so, not Nancy and Jack!

I never THOUGHT about playing ball on my neighbors yards, let alone cutting across their lawns!

I also never sat in the house after school...when mom said "Go out and play, I'll call you for dinner", I went outside and played! TV-time and Atari 2600 times were limited LOL.

When I was a kid, if you did crappy in school you STAYED BACK! That was enough to scare you into doing well! And in high school, there WERE different levels (Phase 1 thru 5) of classes, depending on your learning ability. NOT EVERYONE WAS FORCED INTO COLLEGE PREP People WERE allowed to choose to go into vocational programs vs. college prep.

There was no such thing as ADD or ADHD!!!!!!

Today everything is blamed on some sort of manufactured "disorder"
I know what you mean.. One time I was sassing my Mom while she was cooking and I was sitting at the bar on a bar stool ... she warned me with the "I have had enough" sentence. But I kept pushing it... I rolled my eyes and said "HUH" one to many times... she backhanded me and knocked me off of the bar stool ... That is all it took ... I never rolled my eyes or back talked her ever again!

I tried the "time out" thing on my oldest a couple of times the first time he pulled a section of wall paper off of the wall and the other he had a marker in his pocket and drew all over the wall... so that kinda back fired

I have stayed on my boys and have taught them right from wrong and that there are consiquences to their actions, now I have to say I have a couple of fine boys they are very respectful to me and others.

There is a sense of entitlement I sense to many today.

My first car when I got my license was an old fleet van ('76 E250) that my father bought off his company for $400 and used to tow the boat..... 2 front seats, bare metal inside. I bought it from him and took it over and was happy as a pig in shit. 3 on the tree with a 351W. Loved it.

Now, they aren't happy unless they have a brand new car or something....god forbid they drive an old minivan or station wagon...that wouldn't be cool

God I must be getting friggin old.....LOL

Heh, exactly, I used to mow lawns all summer and walk around with a snow shovel drumming up business in the winter. Old fashioned way! I also never got an ALLOWANCE! WTF is that?????

My father told me I should be glad I had a roof over my head and food on the table. And I was expected to work for that by mowing our lawn, splitting wood, etc!

    OK, I'm done for now

Today's children DO NOT have it made, contrary to what many of these posts would suggest. The author of that note hit the nail on the head when he traced a lot of today's problems to the fact that we no longer grow up outdoors. All of the breaks and luxuries we give our children today can never make it up to them for the type of world WE have created and brought them into. It is easy to blame the governement, the lawyers, the foreigners and this and that. Much harder to look inside.
    Take a kid fishing. Please.
