WE HAVE TO KILL TO PROTECT..........IS BS

SAN FRANCISCO, California (AP) -- Wildlife officials on Thursday credited a woman with saving her husband's life by clubbing a mountain lion that attacked him while the couple hiked in a California state park.

After the attack, game wardens closed the park and released hounds to track the lion. They later shot and killed two lions found near the trail where the attack happened.

The carcasses were flown to a state forensics lab to determine if either animal had mauled the man.

WHY DID THEY HAVE TO KILL TWO LIONS BECAUSE ONE OF THEM MAY HAVE CHOSEN TO EAT THIS GUY?!?!? EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW THE DANGERS OF THE WILDERNESS. EITHER STAY HOME OR TAKE THE RISK. DEATH TO TWO LIONS IS REDICULOUS. WHO WAS AT THE TOP OF THE FOOD CHAIN THIS TIME!?!??! WE'RE IN THEIR HOUSE AND THEIR RULES APPLY MORE TIMES THAN NOT WHEN ONE ON ONE.

I think that's fairly standard isn't it? Not saying it's right, but if a pit bull mauls someome, or a bear attacks someone, or a great white attacks someone , the offender is usually put down.

It does seem a shame where the lions are so rare, but I think that the argument "for" is that if they are actively hunting humans once then they will do it again. It's too bad that they couldn't have been tranquilized and placed somewhere else given how few of them are left.

Sounds terrible but I'd have loved to have been behind the hounds... Nothing, huntingwise, would be more of a rush.
Big cats are seen around these parts. None of us talk specifics about it very much as to keep the outsiders away... I know where two of them are now. They've been spotted a couple of times around a sheep farm by a friend of mine. He's not quite so forgiving of their existance stats as they're trying to eat his sheep .

yeah. and that's the rush the lion had when he was in kill mode! rush for a rush don't you think?

listen, i'm a hunter and fisherman. but i don't agree that man kind has the right to kill for revenge or future protection. and i say this on the standpoint that there are more lion "killers" out there.

maybe we should act upon ourselves in such a manner of that of killing dangerous game after they've killled................

You'll have one hell of a fight on your hands (legal-wise of course) if you break into my house, my dog mauls your ass, and ANYONE wants to kill my dog for the action.

That is the same scenario that played out in CA. Those people were in the lion's house. The only difference is that there was no one there to protect the lion. Not to mention the two that were killed neither of which may have been the attacker!

Absolutely preposterous. As crazy as he was, Steve Irwin always said that if anything happened to him it was because HE put himself in the situation. It isn't the animal's fault for being an animal an living where God intended for him to live.

Yeah, I'm sure he was in rush mode when he was trying to kill and eat that guy... I don't agree with you go in and kill everyone you see because of one attack; but, you can't say it's really ever been any different through history.

I also saw where so many % of the people that live/hunt/hike in that area carry sidearms just for such occasions. The people that had the horrible experience should have been armed and dispatched the guilty party on the scene . Now they don't even know if either one did the killing... Smart!

It's a dream of mine to hunt big cats (and bear also) with hounds. Probably all falls back on my owning and hunting over them when I was growing up... I don't think the situation warranted what was done; but, as shoe said "I think that's fairly standard isn't it?". Still doesn't make it right; but, probably makes the guy with eightyleven stitches & the park service feel a lil better...

I'm sorry, but I disagree with you on this one. Let's understand some of the details here:
First, the Lion attack was particulary violent in that the Lion mauled the victum with every intention of killing the man.

Second, this attack did not happen in a Wilderness area, but rather a State Park that is very popular with Hikers.

Now a cat that has no fear of humans and has acquired a taste for people is a very dangerous animal. People's lives are much more valuable that a couple of cats.

BTW, recent estimates of California's Mtn Lion population are 5,000-6,000
(up from 600 in 1971), and are believed to be about as high as pre European settlement.

Don't be sorry Glenn. I wouldn't think twice about dispatching any wild animal that threatened my family and I doubt that if any of you had a loved one attacked that you would either.

    If I am correct??

California enacted by I & R vote couple years ago to STOP all Lion Hunting. Cats will propogate and move to new range, Food is Food to them... The lack of Human fear is an issue! NJ has a bear issue in the north, Too many People in Camden ( SOUTH CITY) do not like the bears being shot so the Gov shut it down!!! Polotics will get some one hurt...
