    which way should I go.

Ok, here is the deal. I am going to be at the nc outer banks from June 20th thru July 3rd. I got a deal on the cottage, so I think I can swing a charter. I do not have enough though for an all day offshore. So, would I be better off taking an all day inshore charter or half day offshore. There will be 5 of us, and I know inshore charters go up with the number of anglers. I figure the cost will be within $100 or so. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I'm not sure what part of the OBX you will be in but if it is around the nags head / kitty hawk area then Pirates Cove and Oregon Inlet are two good marinas to check out. And if you don't have enough money to do an all day off-shore then you would have to do an all or half-day nearshore or sound charter. Pirates Cove and Oregon Inlet don't offer a half-day offshore option, for it would be kind of pointless to run all the way out, fish for an hour or two then have to run back in. But you could definitely do an all or half-day nearshore and catch bluefish and spanish mackeral or potentially some reds and cobia, which all depends on what yall want to do. And with the sound charters you can catch some big ol' doormat flounder and trout as well as tasty spot and croaker! The half-day nearshore runs in the morning from 7:00 to i think 11:00 or so then the afternoon from 12:00 to around 4. And I know Pirates Cove offers 3/4 day trips as well. And yeah the rates vary from marina to marina. I think that both OI and PC are around $475 to $500 for the 1/2 day charters, so your right it should be around $100 or so per person. But each are class A marinas with great captains so i'm sure wherever you choose you will have a great time and load the coolers up! Hope this helps.

Thanks Seaphase. I am staying in Avon. I went out two years ago on a half day out of Teaches lair. It was supposed to be 4 hours of trolling for kings near shore. Instead after 2 hours of my 13 y/o son driving the boat 100 yards offshore while the (we will call him) the captain was on the phone with his buddy complaining about his wife I told him to take us back. His response was ok I was getting ready to head in anyway.

Wow I can't believe that. That kind of stuff gives, not only the captain and the boat, but the marina a bad name as well. But if you are looking for a great day of fishing a don't mind making a drive you should definitely give OI or PC a shot. They are both great marinas with captains and mates who love fishing and love to see their customers have fun and catch fish. As well as doing anything they can to see you hook up with the fish of a lifetime. If you need any other info just let me know. We keep our boat at PC and there are some great nearshore captains. Everytime they come in the boats are loaded up with fish and happy customers! Hope this helps.

Here is what I suggest...If I were you I would get in touch with the Little Clam. Patrick runs the boat and is a fun guy to fish with. He can set up a make up charter and it shouldn't cost you guys more than 160.00 a piece. I PROMISE that he will put you on the fish...I fish ALOT...and never have to charter..and he is the ONLY charter that I will go on. You can ask several people here on this site that have their own boats and they STILL pay him to take them out. He is out of Hatteras..if you are staying in Naggs Head...it's only an hour or so drive..but well worth it. He's not a troll fisherman..but he will put plenty of meat in the box!! If you need an extra man to fill the chater..let me know...I might be avalible..

Doing an inshore all day might be the better solution. A lot of times kings are also in range if you do the all day. I would suggest you PM Fishskipper or Capt Troy Crane on this site. They both run from Pirate's Cove and both will put you on the fish.
