Waste of time

I was trying to get gear for tuna fishing. I bought 2 shimano tld 25 with tallus rods. I am ready to get more stuff but it is getting pretty expensive and i would only be abe to do it 1 or 2 times a year. I have a 07' 23ft gw but dont know if the money invested would be worth continuing or should i just go out on a charter. whats your guys thought?

To buy all the gear to only go a couple times a year is expensive. Chartering a couple times a year would not save you anything over time. the purchase of the boat was the big expense. If yu are trying to go econmically, then try getting penn senator reels. Go to a fishing shop that can spool braid with mono top shots and they can take care of you. Try All Tackle.

Charters are cheaper if your only going to fish 1-2 times a year and they know where the fish are. But it is a nice feeling catching fish on your on boat and own tackle. Good luck with your new ride

To be honest I would spend my money on a good charter boat a couple times a year. Collect as much possible gear over the course of time to rig yourself up right and here is why.

If you peace together stuff most likely each trip you will get upset you dont have the right gear. What happens is you then get back to land and end up spending more and more money to gear up.

Fishing on some good boats will introduce you to offshore tips and tricks and diffrent gear.

Find what you like to fish with and the gear aquire it and get out on your own over time.

But before the rods and reels and tackle.
EPIRB
SAT PHONE
LIFE RAFT
GOOD LIKE JACKETS
GOOD GPS
GOOD RADAR
AND FISHFINDER IS ALWAYS A PLUS.

IT IS ALWAYS FUN TO DO IT ON YOUR VERY OWN RIDE......YOU CAN TAKE THE THOUSANDS YOU SAVE FROM YOUR PURCHASES AND BOOK A WORLD CLASS CREW

BUT..IF YOU WANT TO HAVE A BALL WITH A WORLD CLASS CREW.....BOOK MY OLD RIDE....THE RUNOFF WITH CAPT BRIAN AND JOHN

NOT ONLY WILL YOU LEARN ....BUT 99% OF THE TIME ....YOU WILL NEED FREEZER BAGS....AND A LOT OF THEM..........TRUST ME ...I KNOW...I RUINED MORE T-SHIRTS ON THE RUN-OFF THAN MOST GUYS EVER OWN

THE OTHER 1% OF THE TIME...IT WAS BLOWING TOO HARD TO GO

EXACTLY RIGHT!!! When I started out, the first things on my list was safety related. Took me two years to get what John mentioned in his list:
EPIRB
SAT PHONE
LIFE RAFT
GOOD LIKE JACKETS
DITCH BAG
IMMERSION SUITS

before I ever even considered it. You owe it to both your crew, their families and yourself to have this stuff on board as Captain. Then and only then is when I dabbled into lures and rods/reels. Get this stuff first and in the meantime fish with friends or charters.

i personally like to charter for no other reason than i don't have my own boat. which is a pretty good reason...

go on boats that you can get hands on and get dirty and learn how it's done. there's no other training than hands on. see what they're using (gear/techniques/bait/rigging) for a specific species. it's pretty cost effective for all involved plus you make new friends and learn at the same time.

yeah i guess its best of both worlds. I have chartered before and love it and will continue, but there is times that i want to have the excitment of telling the stories from my own boat. I guess its the personnal achievment that makes me want to do this. oh yeah, the fishing is great to. I will have to start slow and build up as mentioned. Any recommended palces to get rods at cheaper deals and epirbs?

well for safety gear, you could try West Marine in Glen Burnie and Alltackle in Annapolis, both are good sources

I also agree wth the others about having ALL the right gear
the Atlantic can be a great fishery but at the sametime can be a real sob as the weather can turn on you inna' minute

if you do need someone to fish wth out of OC, Im usally aval and have some offshore gear of my own

Raft first Epirb second, no one ever survived hypothermia floating while hanging on to an Epirb. Rafts can be bought used from most service centers, check LRSA. They can even be rented from dealers online along with Sat phones if you are only going to go a few times a year, like you mentioned. I would really look into that route. Epirbs can be bought at WM or any store, usually running deals around the holidays with free ditch bags etc. Get a manual Cat I and keep it in the ditch bag with you at all times.

If you are ever in NY, I would be glad to take you out.
