If you are just starting out, I strongly suggest going the charter route to begin with. Pick the right boat - Like the Run-OFF and you will have the opportunity to learn the right way to do it - That alone will probably save you more money in tackle stores than the charters cost AND when you are ready to catch them on your own boat, you'll know what you are doing.
Admin is dead on - Safety first then all the gold reels, etc... - Another reason to start with a first class charter - they are prepared. |

when I started out i got a lot of my rods /reels used through the sales forums of most the fishing sites i visited. Lot of guys will sell used gear in winter and the charters often upgrade then too.try ebay too if your comfortable with it, but make sure you don't over bid the price if you bought in the store...

Admin's advice is golden, as is most of the other advice here. I agree on chartering if you are only going to go out a couple of times a year. The learning alone is worth more than the fish catching. When it comes time for you to make the long runs you will have a good idea of what you do and don't need when it comes to tackle, lures, etc. because you have seen and used it. Meantime, perfect your inshore fishing skills and become a better overall fisherman...it will stand you in good stead once you start the long runs for the blue water fish on your own.
Good to see the emphasis on safety from so many members. It truly is number one. Good luck! |

a 23 gw will get you there a couple times a year. I am sure you bought the boat for other type of fishing. I also bought a 23 '. I have just as much fun inshore. It is nice to run off on the calm day. It sucks when the wind kicks to a different gear and you have a long ride back. Trust me on that one. LOL oh the days !!!!
Now if your boat was in a different local, like, palm beach. The run is short to the playground, Still then, you have a season of big rollers and stiff wind. Please do not give up. There are many places to fish, with in 10 miles of shore here, on the Delaware, New Joisey and Maryland coast. Back to your question. Charter for tuna and larger fish. There are captains on this site that think like tuna. Some even smell like tuna....LOL guys.... They will place you on top of them day in and day out. Learn from this group of fishermen. It will pay off in the long run. Just my point of view. tight lines man. go catch some fish !!!!!![]() Last edited by flatbottom; 06-21-2007 at 04:33 PM. Reason: I can't spell for shit |

Ditto on all of the safety advice here.
You can't justify the decision by weighing the expense alone. Charters are great fun and you actually stand a better chance at putting meat in the box. But there is no greater thrill and satisfaction (well OK, maybe one greater) than trolling up pelagics on your own boat, in your own time, with your own gear that you rigged. Its like watching the superbowl as opposed to winning it. The best part is you get to gaff and bleed the fish yourself, not pay a mate to do it . Unga bunga bonga binga! Gotta satisfy those caveman impulses.

My Two Cents
I think alot of good advice has already been conveyed, especially the safety requirements but I'm throwing in my 2 cents.
You have already fished on some charters and a good next step would be to fish on a private rig where you will be closer to the situation of running your boat. There are several private boat guys on this board that run out of OC that would probably invite you to fish with them if you keep your ears open. There is definitely an art to small boat big game fishing and the additionaly safety precautions and weather considerations. Riding along with some guys like this in your neck of the woods will give you a real good idea of where to go, what it feels like to actually have the freedom and responsibility of running a boat offshore as opposed to watching a professional make it look really easy because he does it every day. With this said be wary of anyone you jump on a boat with and don't be shy about asking what safety equipment proceedures are for the vessel, private or charter. You don't want to be 50 miles out with the guy that empties the beer cooler on the ride out. *** Very Important *** Don't go fishing on an unlicensed "Charter Boat", If some one (without CG license) offers to take you fishing and wants $ they are breaking the law. Sharing fuel cost is one thing but paying someone is another. *** Very Important *** |

fishing is a never ending money pit. I go 5 -10 times a year and I'm in the process of getting 2 30 tiagras and some 50 TLDs
