Volvo Penta is supposed to maintain records on warranty work when it is done to their products, by Federal requirement, and then make those records available upon request by Certified boat mechanics. However, in the case of the 2004 World Cat HTS model, Volvo will not release those records.
One of my mechanics, Coastal Marine in Seattle, tried to get the records on my boat in June 2008 but Volvo would not release them. Volvo had to put a new engine in my boat after it sucked in salt when the first owner had it, so I know there are records, but for some reason Volvo will not provide any warranty records. I sent a certified letter to VP, with all the necessary info on my boat, and VP would not provide records.
According to Marcia Kull, legal council for VP, there was a lawsuit against World Cat, VP, and Town Creek Marina so VP "can't release those records", but Coastal Marine requested the records a year before the lawsuit was filed. I think VP knew other diesel owners were going to sue World Cat so VP, in cohoots with WC, have decided to keep those records from the public. The lawsuit VP referred to has been over since Dec.09 and after another request...no records.
Marcia Kull knows they are hiding information and I wonder what branch of the Federal government regulates VP in maintaining these records because I would like to file a complaint against VP for not making warranty information available upon request.
If you buy a Volvo Penta product you may run into the same problem, so do your homework before you buy and especially on used Volvo Penta products!
