People vote democrat because they believe the govt owes them everything from breakfast, lunch, and dinner. then they owe them healthcare, a college education, happiness, a safety seat in their car and everything else until they retire and then they want a pension and social security. Look at all that data glenn and if you can inteperate it.....well there isnt any hope for you moving up to at least the #3 position in a fishing crew. They believe most so than conservatives in communalism, that the community either their neighborhood or all the way up to the national level have a significant if not decisive role in fostering a healthy, secure, decent and econimically suitable society. Sure, there are some welfare queens among democratic voters. But in no way to they predominate.

Most Democrats just simply have accepted that it's in their best interests to ensure that the society as a whole prospers rather than merely one small select group within society.

OK. So, that's the reason some folks vote Democratic. And, that's what they believe in.

What they tend not to believe in is the myth of rugged American individualism from which springs the tendancy of conservatives to be authoritiarians and to believe in American Exceptionalism.

What myth? Well, it goes sort of like this...rugged, white, largely Christian (not taking anything away from the Mormons) through their hard work and toughness settled the country, but especially the West, and that's the sort of people conservatives are today.

There's two problems with that myth.

Firstly, it's an historical myth. Actually, the U.S. Government after Colonial times was the principle actor in opening the west and the rugged types simply followed on after the government action. Think about it. Most if not all of the land (but for Texas) was gained via either government purchase or military conquest. Then the land was sold or conveyed to "settlers" or business interest at far less than the governament paid for it.

Myth busted. The government of the U.S. has always done the heavy lifting and the rugged individualist myth is exactly that...self-serving fantasy.

The second myth is that this rugged individualism continues today and that communalism provides relatively little for those rugged individual conservatives that they couldn't and haven't done already for themselves. Complete bolderdash.

The government at various levels and through the expenditure of tax revenues provides roads, schools, universities, national defense, postal services, health services for the elderly, social security for the old, medicaid for the disabled and needy, etc., etc., etc.

The country as we know it would absolutely not exist were it not for communalism but, instead, would resemble Afghanistan with local feudal tribes governing very small enclaves of territory.

The conservative myths are just that, fantasies that fit neatly within their system of self-beknighted selfishness. Most of what they say about themselves is pure B.S.
