VIDEO OF MASSIVE 7 ALARM FIRE IN PHILADELPHIA
http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?se...ews&id=4919482
CLICK ON 7 ALARM FIRE IN KENSINGTON PHILADELPHIA (AP) - June 20, 2007 - Fire officials have brought a seven-alarm fire in an abandoned factory and warehouse under control in the West Kensington section of Philadelphia. Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers says the fire was in hand about 6 a-m. It had broken out shortly after four o'clock and quickly went to seven alarms as flames spread to several nearby row houses. Residents say several homes in one block were damaged, and cars in the street also burned. Ayers says one man was rescued by firefighters from a second-floor ledge of the building and was taken to Temple University Hospital, where he is in stable condition. Two firefighters were treated for heat exposure and given fluids at the scene. The commissioner says some 490 houses in the area are without electrical service because of the fire, and an evacuation center was set up at a Salvation Army church down the street. About 170 firefighters and dozens of fire vehicles are on the scene.

Break out the marshmallows...
Damn that's a big fire. When you look down inside the building it's just glowing embers....I'd say it's a bit toasty in there. The write-up didn't say that anyone was killed, so thank god for that. Stuff can be replaced. |

The train I take into the office passes within a half block of the building. There had to be 50-100 firemen on the rooftops of surrounding buildings and homes using about a dozen hoses on the inferno and surrounding structures. The train engineer slowed the train so we could get a good look at the scene. There were firetrucks everywhere....they had a 5 block radius around cordoned off. In 1991, we had one of the largest fires in US history, a 12 alarmer, hit the Meridian Bank Building, a 38 story high rise right across from City Hall. EVERY fireman in the City of Philadelphia was at the scene, as well as firemen from fire departments just outside the City and from New Jersey and Delaware. We were 4 blocks away and the heat felt as though we were right there fighting the fire!! It took days to extinguish the blaze. I'll never forget it.

I'm surprised that more fires like that don't happen in other cities that have houses so close together.
Thaf must have been a sight to see from the train...I'm surprised you couldn't feel the heat being so close to it. Are they still not reporting any deaths? |
