I'm looking to convert a lot of our family VHS tapes to DVD. I want to be able to edit the movies for a final product. Not necessary to put on the Internet but want to clean up the tapes. I would like to put our Christmas videos together. 3 to 5 years on one disc. How many hours can you put on a DVD. I need an easy format to do this cause I know nothing when it comes to this. Read a little about video cards and external drives. What is the best(easiest) software to use?

I recently bought a stand alone device from Sony... I believe the model is Vrd-vc20... I can dovhs/ 8mm hi8 and digi8 with it... It has a pause button during record mode to shed the useless stuff and pretty simple... Writes on all kinds of disc formats...
Use a piece of hardware as deep has stated to convert to digital format. Once in digital format you can edit with any of the editing software available. Sony Vegas, Adobe Premier, Pinnacle10+, and windows movie maker 2
When transfering the videos does the device put the video on your hard drive 1st? Or does it burn right onto the DVD, I have a dell with a cd burner. Will that burn DVDs? Or do I need a DVD burner?
