Guys I need all the help and advice I can get right now. I will get this out of the way now, before it comes up again. I have no insurance on my boat thanks to my exwife. I was heading into Southwest pass last night and managed to run aground on top of the Jetties out at almost the end. No one was hurt and we were rescued in a couple of minutes. It was high tide and I just didnt see them. Even the coast gaurd had a hard time actually finding them afterwards. But anyway, I need suggestions, solutions, help, basically anything you can offer to help try and salvage what I can from the boat. I am unsure of the extent of hull damage right now. I do know that it was taking water on in the cabin, but the damage may be above the water line when uprighted. The coast guard felt it will probably stay put unless the weather gets really bad. I would be happy to just salvage the engines. They are high and dry on top of the Jetties and I dont think they hit anything. I had to put the engines in neutral and shut them down. We were moving at about 12-15 mph at the time and almost made it over. Thats how low they were. My cell phone was dropped in the water during all of this, so if anyone needs to contact me, please call (337)667-7735
I have never been in a situation like this and just dont know who to call or where to go. The coast guard didnt have any suggestions either. They did tell me that I an the 4th or 5th boat to run aground with one being an offshore dive boat and one being a crew boat. They said the rocks were knocked over during Gustav and might need to be replaced, lol.
Hit the rockpile on the ICW,no insurance, same situation, first call various salvage operations, get prices to remove boat from jetty, secure a marina where you can work on the boat while its in the yard,if need be contact a maritime attorney,as i dont know salvage law, seems some time has to pass before its open salvage, get it off the rocks...put a hit out on your ex..and be prepared to spend some serious jack. Good Luck Amigo
Guys, I am not sure if I need help anymore. I just got off the phone with the Coast Guard and they said they could not relocate the boat, so it may be completely submerged now. The coast guard is going to see what if anything they can locate, but its not looking good.
Marine4003, if the boat has completely sunk, then I am not going to pursue salvage unless forced to. I would imagine that after being sunk next to the jetties and getting pushed back into the rocks from ship traffic, probably not worth the expense at this point.
Sorry about your loss but you probably will have to pay to raise the boat if they locate it.You could also get fined for the clean up if the boat creates a slick or discharges oil or Fuel in the water.
Megabite is correct. You may end up paying more for the clean up if a leak is created and you boat is located. Try and use your homeowners insurance to help with the cost of your boat. I had an issue where a kid on his nike caused me to wreck my jeep. Yhis was witnessed by a cop. In the end the kids parents had to use their homeoweners insurance to cover mt damages. Good luck.
first off if you find it and it is leaking fuel call the coasties and you will not be facing a huge fine. If you do not report it leaking they can hit you with a bottom line of 10k... I have raised boats with the plastic 50 gal drums. just cut the top out right inside the outter ring and drill 3 holes big enough for some big eyebolts and use big fender washers and a locknut in the top and attach some chain like a tripod. leave just enough chian to shackle the barrels on each corner and bow eye. if you sink (flip the barrels upside down in the water they sink and you can attach them to the boat...just air them up with your dive regulator some and they will hold thier place .. start adding air to all three and they will lift your boat. tow it in and take the motors off and save what you can. If you can even find it.
My pop was a UDT guy but I never knew him... but after Andrew hit down here I figured out quick how to raise boats and make $! damn lift bags were expensive and plus the barrels gave tou something to load all your stuff in.
