    Unreal catch--1st ever???

    Unreal catch--1st ever???-tiles-018.jpg
This monster tile was big enough to eat any of the tilefish I've caught to date! But, after landing it, Shimano rep Justin Poe said he was going to catch one of these bad boys on a Shimano Butterfly jig. Yeah, right... a tilefish in 750' of water on a 9-oz. jig...fat chance. Well guys, he dropped down a Butterfly--just the metal, NO bait attached--on a Torsa/Trevalla rig spooled with 80-lb. braid, bounced the tip twice and BAM hooked up with this BEAST of a tilefish!!!

At the scales it weighed out at 52-lbs, a mere 7-lbs shy of the world record. Has anyone ever heard of a golden tilefish being caught on a jig??? Could this be a first?

Wow...i really don't know what to say. Despite numerous efforts to get one of these on bait, i can't even imagine getting one on a jig. Crazy!

    Sweet Tile

    Congrat's on that beauty!

Believe a NJ or close by guy/boat got a state record out there last season, Canyon Runner and other's have started targeting the Tiles the past couple season's on their Canyon trip's and have done well using JIGS on Spectra also.

What Reel/Rod set-up are you using? You may consider setting up a couple electric Reels to target them also..

Canyon Runner's already got them on jigs? Dang! The new record (59-lbs) was set by Ron Calis, the captain of the Reel Addiction out of Ocean City...who just happened to be onboard with us. We decided to limit ourselves to one fish per person per day (and will stick to this in the future) since the tiles have already been fished out once, so hand-cranking isn't a big deal. Plus, the jig rods were matched with Torsas. The ratio on them is so high, one full turn of the crank is 45" of retrieve! Dang! I can't believe someone's already jigged 'em up!!

Yes, we have caught several on jigs last year and the year before. It does seem that the big ones only hit the jigs. Both of the Golden we caught on jig were over 35 lbs! I actually had a World record at 51.2 lbs for a couple years.

    BTW,
Real nice catch! Great pictures too!
