Drone spoon and a # 12 or #16 planer also pink seawitch with a bonita strip or cigar minnow 40-60 ft of 80-100 lb mono with a hook to hook double hook set up. The seawitch set up can be fished on a down rigger like the drone spoon use old salty planers so you can trip them to check the bait or fish it off a rod on top or with a #3 planer.

Trophy is right on the mark. I would use about 4 feet of #7 wire albrighted to your leader. Those kings are toothey rascals and those drones aren't cheap.

I still don't understand the attraction to Kingfish... Here's my description: they hit your lure/bait...,make one half assed run...then you reel in dead weight. For table fare, they're horrible, much better fish out there to eat. So why the attraction??? Is it the $$$ in those "tournaments"?

As you can imagine, we catch more than our fair share here in Texas. For me, they are a trash fish that I will pull the hooks on if I bring it to boatside...for guests & newbies, we will boat them and do the picture thing...but if they go in the box, they will become bait, not dinner.

What's the deal...what am I missing?...is there a secret recipe for making these mush-meat torpedos taste good??? Would you trade a Mahi for a King???

I agree with you on the taste, but my buddy smokes them and makes a fish dip with the meat. It is absolutely the best I've ever had. As long as I take him a few fish for himself,he makes me some dip.

I like to use a feather jig and tip it with a cigar minnow. If you want to get some aerobatics out of the fish, then troll it close. About 30 ft. behind the boat at a slow troll to keep the bait under the surface.

    To eat a king mackeral

you have to use the fresh fish. Fried mackeral chunks are delicious hot or cold. Grilled marinated fillets of the fresh fish makes a good meal. I particularly like mackeral cakes. Boil the meat and combine flaked fish and egg with sauteed onions and celery and flavored with Old Bay. Dust with Autries breading or Italian bread crumbs, etc and brown in the frying pan. Delicious. Excess cakes can be vacuum bagged for later consumption, warmed or cold.

Mackeral is oily and does not freeze well. The flavor becomes strong or rancid.

Only keep as many kings as you can consume FRESH. DO NOT FREEZE. A well prepared king is part of the many indiginous dishes we have in eastern North Carolia. Soul food.

    Bon appetit.
