Having never got to that point in an emergency I would say that was pretty accurate how those events probally would have evolved on a mild day during daylight hours the boat may have gone down faster than depicted for tv
I have had three occasions when all those thoughts went through my head and I a was glad to see it acted out for any one that has not had that feeling before It's pretty scary
First time we had an engine block crack about 2 hours north of St Augustine
At 2 am in the morning steaming from Moorhead south all of a sudden both engines went down and the engine room was completely covered in oil
Woke up out of a sound sleep to see the cappy holding his hands up in the air, no alarms no decrease in oil pressure it just popped and blew out all the oil?? Luckily we limped in after assessing the damage.
Second time we were steaming offshore about 10 miles from the nearest beach and the bilge alarm light for the engine room kept coming on like it usually does when you first start running or if the sea state changes then the duration turned a little more frequent I went down to take a look and Voila there was a stream of water coming from a brand new drip less stuffing box spraying straight up and getting everything down there soaked we backed it down and limped in, minutes after we hit the dock it was fixed with a few turns of an Allen wrench ? If I had known I would have made the fix myself
Live and learn I guess
Third time
Steaming south i think we were 30-40 miles of the beach the hose clamps on the connection form the hard tube exhaust to the rubber take up exhaust tube let go and we did not have a spare clamp so we scabbed one from the other side and kept an eye on it!!!!
I step on at least 30 strange vessels per year and the first question I ask is were is the safety equipment and if I don't like were it is stored I will ask to re-position it to a more accessible place!!!
There is nothing you can do from preventing an underwater collision with a submerged object just be prepared if it ever happens check and re-check your saftey gear and it's location
when you are far offsore it just goes to show that having some back up repair items like shown in Marty and Brians video will help immensly
Great show Tred. I think it is super that you took time away from fishing to show concern for safety. We all need to think. I know it costs a lot to produce these shows and you took a real chance with this one, but I believe you came up with a really BIG HIT on this safety show. My Congratulations.
