    traveling...

I'm heading to playa del carmen area in mexico (yes, I am aware of the swine flu) and was thinking of bringing a rod to fish from the beach. I haven't flown with one in years (pre- 9/11) and was wondering if it is a big hassle or not... thanks for any responses!

You can take fishing rods, but they go as special baggage, so you usually have to check them in at a different counter, and pick em up at a different area at bag claim. However, pack em real good.
I used a 4 inch piece of PVC pipe to pack my rods in, and they still managed to smash the end off.
I swear they drag this stuff behind the plane.
Some airlines will charge you extra for these type of things.....ski's....golf clubs....etc.
Pack your fishing reels in your carry-on luggage, as things tend to go missing during baggage handling.

This is the first vacation for my wife and me since we adopted our kids from Kazakhstan a few years ago. I'm thinking of forgoing the fishing, spending some QT with the "boss" and banking some wife points for the future- drum season is getting going here in VA soon to be followed by cobia time, and I haven't fished in forever (having a 2 and 3 year old will do that to you)!

Thanks for the advice and response!
