Trailering Help!
I need help setting up my trailer! Right now there's too much tongue weight for my vehicle and the back end gets bottomed out. The boat sits on a double axle bunk trailer and is all the way up on the trailer to where the transom only has about 1/4 of an inch before the bunks would be past the end of the boat. My vehicle is a '07 4runner, and although not the "ideal" tow vehicle, I think it has enough muscle to handle the haul from philly to cape may twice a year. I've seen some boats with 1-3 feet sticking out past the end of the bunks, which I'm guessing effects the tongue weight. Larger trucks have no problem pulling my boat on the trailer, but I REALLY hate having to ask and depend on ppl. I REALLY want to make my 4runner work. How do I determine how far back to set the wench stand? right now I believe the gas tank is forward of both axles, so wouldn't I want the majority of the boats weight to be on both axles? I would think so, but I'm not the expert. Some people have said move it back 6 inches, some have said 2 feet. I'm sure trial and error is key, but is there a way to determine a good measurement from the start? Too little tongue weight and the boat starts to sway behind you, too much tongue weight and you bottom out your vehicles back end. How do I make a good guess for a happy middle point? Thanks everyone

tongue weight
A google search will get you info on measuring tongue weight.
Just dont go to light or the trailer will be all over the road.

What I used to do is first find out what your vehicle is rated for, kind of like a truck, !/4 ton, 1/2 ton, etc, then go half on your boat trailer tongue weight. Start where the boat is now, and slowly move it back until you get down to the right weight, then adjust your winch, rollers, bunkers, etc. If you find it wandering, move it forward. Good place to start anyway.
