Tournament mentality

My son had a charter today and was out of Palm Beach, fun fishing with a young family. A pod of fish popped up in his spread. My son had 3 baits off a kite, one off a rigger and a deep rod out. This was during the time when the Silver Sailfish Derby in Palm Beach was going on. My son was not in the tournament. Seeing the pod of fish, a well known tournament boat backed into spread, 15 feet off my son's transom and the captain started screaming at the anglers to cast baits into the pod, which they did. Upon hooking up, the captain then screamed at my son to get out of the way as the fish he hooked up was worth $30,000.

I guess tournament mentality outweighs common courtesy

As a side note, my son got two of his anglers, both young , their first sails today.

Did he get out of the way when the captain started to yell at him? He should have cut the fish off with his props!

So what boat was it? Lay him out to dry right here... Otherwise he'll keep on doing it... I have buds on the comittee over there that could let him know thats not condoned...

If however the boat was bowed up "near" his spread and he was refusing to move as a fish came his way (without screwing his own bowed up ones) that would be wrong too. Most of the guys out there are good about maneuvering around EACH OTHERS fish.

In the heat of the moment stuff happens. I had a guy in Islamorada pull up in front of me and drop the anchor to bottom fish while I was working a spot during a tournament. I wasn't tickled about it as I bowed up but we worked the fish around past him.

I think I would have backed up to his line, reached out and cut the fish loose. Assholes in tournaments cause alot of bad feelings with alot of different boaters not just anglers I think these tournaments need to have and enforce conduct regulations, let someone act like that when Im out fishing and I gaurantee Ill be cutting across their transom all weekend fouling every spread they put out, theres nothing I enjoy more than ruining some assholes day. In case you cant tell Im having a shitty day...

Well known tournament boat..

adrenaline..makes good people do dumb things..not to mention the ego attached to it..I doubt it was the money that motivated the Capn' to act this way..

pretty obvious..the common courtesy and simple quick discussion with your son to ask permission to "come into his slick" and why "were in the tournament" would have been the professional thing to do..

On the other hand..I have seen 6oz. sinkers explode windshields of curious dumb boaters entering a tuna chunking fleet whilst a good bluefin bite is on..AFTER being warned many times on the radio and being waved off.

I agree, out the Captain. Also, try to get some video of the situation and embarrass. If I saw myself doing that on video I would have to appoligize and mend my ways. Maybe the dude was on something?

Violence is a last resort, but certainly understandable in this situation. 15 feet is just too frakin close for comfort.
