    GREAT WORDS OF WISDOM FROM AN EXPERIENCED MAN!!!

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I HAVE FISHED NO LESS THAN 160 OFFSHORE TOURNAMENTS IN MY TIME.....I HAVE BEEN THERE AND DONE IT....LOST A SHITLOAD OF EM AND WON A VERY FEW....NO ONE REMEMBERS 2ND AND THIRD PLACE....ONLY THE WINNER IS REMEMBERED
    IN 1989 I FISHED ON THE JUNEBUG FOR TOURNYS....WE ALWAYS ENTERED ALL LEVELS OF A TOURNY......WE WERE ON THE LAST DAY OF THE TOURNAMENT AND THREE NICE FISH WERE ALREADY HANGING(NONE BY US).....WE HOOKED A SMALLER BLUE MARLIN WHICH WOULD NOT PLACE AND I LEADERED HIM TO THE STERN I SAID "HE'S TOO SMALL"....THE BOAT OWNER SCREAMED KILL HIM!!!! KILL HIM!!!!...FOR I AM IN A DOCKSIDE CALCUTTA AND THE SMALLER FISH WILL WIN A FEW GRAND!!!!!"
    THIS WAS NEW NEWS TO ME FOR HE NEVER TOLD US OF THE SIDE BET....
    THEN HE STATED: "BUT YOU GUYS ARE NOT IN ON MY SIDE BETS."..."YOU ARE ONLY IN ON TOURNAMENT MONEY"
    IT WAS LIKE I WALKED INTO A BRICK WALL....HERE THIS BOAT OWNER WANTED ME TO RISK MY WRIST AND PHYSICAL INJURY TO LEADER AND GAFF THIS FISH BUT HE WAS TO COLLECT 100% OF THIS SIDE BET AND SAY SCREW THE CREW...
    "HEY BILL, ...I SAID....IF THAT IS THE CASE, THEN YOU NEED TO COME DOWN AND WIRE AND GAFF YOUR OWN FISH BRO"....THE BLUE ATE A DOUBLE HOOK SPANISH ON #15 WIRE 18 FT LEADER. HE LOOKED LIKE I HAD JUST PIMP SLAPPED HIM
    THERE WAS A MOMENT OR TWO OF DEAD SILENCE ABOUT THE DECK....I JUST HELD ONTO THE SMALL BLUE ...AS HE PADDLED AROUND.
    "OKAY...YOU'RE IN!!!.....GAFF THE SONOFABITCH!!!"
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    MY POINT IS THIS

    A MATE SHOULD BE PAID FOR ALL WORK PERFORMED ON A BOAT....FISHING OR MAINTENANCE....PRIVATE OR CHARTER

    THE ANTI -SLAVERY BILL WAS PASSED 160 YEARS AGO AND IS STILL IN FORCE.

    THE BIG ROCK TOURNY OR ANY TOURNY REQUIRES A MINIMUM OF 5 DAYS GET READY....5 LONG DAYS MAYBE EVEN MORE DEPNDENDING........EVERY REEL ALL NEW LINE ...EVERY HOOK...NEW LEADERS...DREDES ....NOTHING GOES ON BOAT THAT HAS BEEN USED!!!!

    IF I WERE A BOAT OWNER I WOULD WANT TO KEEP MY MATE & CAPTAIN HAPPY AND IN A POSITION TO PAY HIS PERSONAL BILLS WHILE CONTRIBUTING 2 WEEKS OF HIS LIFE SO THAT THE SAID BOAT OWNER HAS A SHOT AT $500.000 OR MORE

    AS A BOAT OWNER I WOULD WANT ANY MAN ON THE LEADER OR GAFF TO BE ON THE SALARIED END OF THIS SHORT TERM BIZINESS THAT HAS BEEN CREATED FOR ONE WEEK.....AS A MATE...I AM WILLING TO DO WHAT IOT TAKES TO GET THE FISH IN THE BOAT!

    THIS IS A BIZNESS....THE BIG ROCK TORUNY ITSELF IS A TWO WEEK BIZINESS THAT HAS BEEN FORMED....

    A MATE & CAPTAIN SHOULD BE PAID GET READY SALARY PLUS A DAILY FISHING SALARY IN ANY MAJOR TOURNAMENT! OF COURSE GET READY SALARY IS A TOUCHY THING.....BUT....JUST MY OPINION.

    THE BIG ROCK IS A 4 OUT OF 6 DAY EVENT.....A MATE MUST PUT HIMSELF ON HOLD FOR TWO OF THESE 6 DAYS AND HE HAS NO IDEA WHICH TWO DAYS IT WILL BE....

    DUDE....DOES YOUR BOAT OWNER EXPECT YOU TO GET A JOB AT TACO KING ON YOUR LAYDAYS SO YOU CAN PAY YOUR BILLS?

    I think that 10% is the "norm" for the deckhand. That's what I ask for.
    But, if he says no, then you either do the job for that, or you walk.....before the tourney. Be upfront. professional. don't miss fish, walk off the boat after fishing expecting the boss to wash the boat because you get nothing of the winnings, etc....does the CEO of a company mop the floors because the janitor did not get his bonus this year? you will be the one to get the bad rep for it, not the boss. you will lose work, job opportunities because people will say you are difficult to work with, a hot shot, etc....and in a sense, they will be right. you get what you agree to. and get it in writing. a contract.

    because Jeff just laid it out for you. That right there is sage advice. Words to live by Well said

    I know a capt. and mate that fished a big money tournament. They were paid well for their services. There was no mention in the event of winning any money in the tournament that they would be compensated. As luck would have it the team won. The owner did not give any tournament winnings to the paid crew. The owner felt he paid the guys to do the job win or loose. Of course the crew was pissed they did not get any money. Again the owner felt they were paid and they got paid for their sevice. This is how some think. Is it the proper thing to do? I guess it depends on the Boss. I wonder if anybody would work for free with the exception if they win they get a healthy chunk of change? Now the owner has money invested and the capt. and mate also has their time invested both parties are at risk. The best answer is talk it out before you go so you know what to expect in the end.

    I have been paid very well running boats and I have run them for nothing. It depends on the situation and the needs. The times are tough out there for captains. just like there tough for boat owners. just like the most beautiful 31 bert is for sale for over a year{sea nile} The problem is its only worth what someone is willing to pay. Same with a mate or captain in this time of more boats but a lot less of them fishing. If you can make a deal go for it.but you better have options incase he has options?

    I met the owner of this boat - super nice dude. Unfortunately, he didn't need / want to sell it bad enough at the time to fit my budget... But You can get a lot of boat for the money out there today. STEEP wholesale prices are everywhere. Just takes some time to find the sweet deals.
