    Tilapia........?

Today i went to an Asian food market. They Have all kinds of fish and seafood there. Everything from sushi grade to fresh water carp. Its kind of interesting to see a culture that doesnt look like ours and how they eat. Anyway they have a tank of fish there that look absolutely disgusting. I mean the waters dirty, the fish are so crowded in there, yes they are alive and swimming around. I mean they sort of look like gold fish. guess what they are? Tilapia......You see them every where now, on menus, food stores everywhere. It looks like they are the new soy bean to me. Feed the world on a gold fish. Has anyone else ever seen them alive? I have to say, I wont be buying them to eat ever again. Although they taste ok, chickens arent that crowded. Plus they look better. I have never seen them before but it hardly looks like something you would want to eat. They are all exactly the same size and they look like goldfish the way they act. Next time, Ill have the tuna, or swordfish, or mahi mahi, or smoked blue marlin.

While I was in TX, I went to an asian market to pick up some supplies to make sushi. They had the same tanks with half tilapia and the other half catfish. The water was dirty and even had a few dead fish floating in it. It was the grossest thing ever for a market to have. I also go to latino markets and have seen the tilapia whole in the seafood sections there, Food lion, and Wal-Mart. It's like the new Pollock. "Use it for anything fish."

There's a tilapia farm in Costa Rica I go to every now and then. If you want they'll give you a pole and let you catch your own and they'll cook em up. Whole fish fried with the head still on. Pretty cool place in the jungle. I'll go there once and a while for something different.

Watched an episode on "dirty jobs" at a rockfish farm in Cali and it seems the talapia basically feed on the rockfish crap at that place. I guess they're the true s*** eaters.

Carp look like goldfish... Tillapia look more like a porgy or snapper... with bands darker at the bottom than the top. I had em in my old back yard by the billions. Yes disgusting... Have one here behind me in the fish tank. The "sole survivor" so to speak. Kills all that I try to put in there. I guess this one is better than ten years old now but stunted growth due to tank size... Damn thing just won't die...

    John,

Thats what i thought. On one end.....Sushi, over here ladies and gentleman........Guide yourself accordingly. And Ive had them in a wine sauce. Actually tasted great but, maybe it was a murky white wine sauce.

Geez Alex! There you go again...

What's not to love about them?
They can thrive in sewage treatment ponds...just a tier or two down from raw sewage. They go well on a mixed fajita..."European Starling and Tilapia Fajitas" for example would be delicious I am sure.
I hear there are also mega muscle building properties in Tilapia flesh, that far outweigh the hair growth side effects.
The filter salesman are pushing to ban them from the aquarium industry however.

Nope – the opposite, those Specials of the night, which they fail to, mention the price, because it cost twice as much as a standard entrée!
