    Things that go bump

What are some of the things that you have bumped into or ran over with your boat when traveling offshore at night heading to the slaughter grounds?

I haven't hit anything at night (yet lol) but last year hit a submerged object while heading out to a sharking spot in the AM. Had a couple cameramen and one of the hosts from NEAngling with me and we were following their lead boat.

Luckily whatever it was just bumped the hull deep down and then kicked my outdrive up momentarily a little bit but did no damage at all. After checking for vibration, and any signs of water, etc, we kept going.

I think it was a sunfish or some sort of marine life, based on the marks on my "leg" and prop. Like very fine sandpaper LOL.

Gotta love having a bulletproof drive lol

we tried to back it off in reverse but no go

Nothing at night, but a crab pot in the middle of the channel without a marker on it. It made a hell of a mess and wrapped tight around the outdrive.
Got out in the mud and had to cut it off.

The next bite on a jig.
We didn't hit it, but the strangest thing I have ever seen offshore is a intact dead alligator floating belly up.

Still had all his toes and everything.

My strangest night hit was in broad daylight. Making 25 knots. Clear and glass smooth. Suddenly KA- BANG!!! ... the ass end hopped up out of the water and the girls started shaking like a *****. I looked behind. No blood or wood... Put them in gear and knew one was ok but the other wheel was pretzelled... Checked undere deck and no appearant bend to shaft and the owner and i were confused as could be. Then I looked forward and saw my anchor chain laying behind the cleat???
Looked in the trace and what do I see but two halves of a shackle that just flat out let go. A new one at that...So it had been a danforth shampoo for my pretty michigan wheels! Never knew that four blades could all point such completely different directions...

Never hit a thing at night. One night though I was sliding to the canyon and had a big target in my radar. The night was clear but no moon. Nothing in sight. The object kept getting closer. Again no sighting. Finally it reached my 1/4 mile ring and I pulled her back. Now I could hear a steady wuh wuh wuh coming at an angle to cross my bow. 60 off 3:Am and I have something threatening me. I lit the spot and theres a big friggin cruise ship. They passed less than 100 yards and once past I could see staff tossing bags of garbage out the back!

No wonder no lights. They didn't want to be seen...

    pole

after a long 3 day trip with my wife, we were cruising back on a glassy Potomac River at 35 kts. Only 2 miles from home the boat goes wham twin outboards hop up and come to a quick stop. I look back to see a 35' pole bobbing up and down. Apparently someone making a dock repair had one get away from them! I was able to limp home on one engine that was barely running. Both engines were totaled.

I was working on a boat one time that almost hit a rig We left out about midnight and a friend of the captains dad wanted to go fishing so he chartered the boat,,, we get out and he told the captain to go get a few winks that he could handle the boat .. I decide to hangout on the fly bridge just to help keep him awake.. well I fell asleep.. I woke up .. saw this guy who was 6'4" all curled up in the chair fast asleep and I saw the bright lights of the rig.. I immediately pulled back on the sticks and started cussing and fussing.. as the boat came to a stop the captain of the boat came running up to the fly bridge and was wondering what was going on... when he found out he was pissed.. he almost hit the guy!!

with the spring rains and unusually high tides the log floaters are everywhere. The dam at conowingo opens the flood gates all 27 i think and what ever is on the north side comes a hellin. We drive around over and sometimes bam guess I just tapped that one. Maybe 6 inches above the water are some pieces and below up to a whole tree. I have tapped a few in my limited time on the water.
