There I Go Being Cynical Again,

I've been looking for a bigger boat for awhile now (still haven't found it yet), but part of the plan is to get involved with stuff like "Make A Wish", "Wounded Warrior's", etc.... I've just got way too much sea time not to share.
Well make a long story short, I went and looked up "Make A Wish" on the computer. Then made the mistake of looking at the charity status, which lead to the salary disclosure of the different chairman. Now I know that it takes some smart's in alot of different area's to make something like that work, but the most important ingredient is "HEART". Heart doesn't have a price tag. I mean it was a total turn off for me. Folk's offer these kids what-ever these kid's wish may be. I don't recall anyone asking to be paid for the opportunity to fulfill one of these kid's dreams. We had a chance(but it was just too late in the game) to take a kid bear hunting. I was all for it, no cost or money was even mentioned. We would do it FOR the child. With the salary's I saw, I gotta tell you it let the wind outta my sail's. I still would love to take those (kids and adult's) out to enjoy what I seem to take for granted, I do it now with the boat I have. Is it just me being the hopeless cynic again? Frank

Frank, check out http://www.wishafish.org/. I participated the first few years and really enjoyed being able to put a smile on a kids face. It's a really good bunch of people behind this organization doing it for the kids. Hoping it won't be too long before I have the time to help again.

In addition to the salaries, take a look at the percentage of your donation that goes to "administrative overhead"

If you are looking for a Charity - Take a look at St Jude Children's Research Hospital - http://www.stjude.org/

I can tell you first hand that the Chairman makes nothing - As a matter of fact, He paid for his own plane tickets to Memphis for Board functions along with hotel bills - The entire board does the same...

Just gonna say about the same thing, before you gived to any charity find out how much of your dollar goes to the actual need...in many cases you're lucky if a dime on the dollar gets through the "management costs."

    Buzzard,

I just looked at the site, that's a whole lot closer to what I had in mind. Guy's I understand about giving to charity. I firmly believe in giving, but that doesn't mean just throw it away. I simply don't have it to toss into the wind. I guess what I had in mind is, OK I don't have alot of spare cash but, I do have a boat and I can "make" the time.
How about we get together a list of projects like this, so that maybe more of us that have rigs can atleast think about it. We all know what happens when the economy heads south, so do these type projects. Well the economy may head south but my boat isn't going anywhere. I don't know about you guy's but, I can still remember my first day out on the ocean with my Grandfather on that old wooden headboat. What memorie's we can provide! Frank

Frank, I agree. Its not right. You know I cant speak for others but I can tell you that every dollar we raise in the "Hook A Hoo" beyond cost to put on goes to the Shrine Hospitals. We pay out $15,000 total in purses + Calcuttas, and everything else goes to the Shrine Hospitals. $30,000+ in three years. And this year will add to that mark. I can proudly say that we take no part of the proceeds. So you gas that Privateer up and plan on coming to Little River the week of April 22nd-May 1st to help us make a difference in a kids life. I know you and I know you would enjoy being a part of this tournament. Ill even tell you where to fish and feed the hogs up good for ya while youre here.

Hope you dont mind me SPAMMIN your thread.
