Surface Temp, Why does it work

    OK.
Spent the morning repairing damage done to my Casa by a bunch of pre pubescient butt head vandals.

Then My thoughts turned back to important things. Like, Why is surface temp a good indication of when and where to fish for what. I know it works, but, why. With a surface temp of 64, Whats it like at 10', 40 maybe ? I took some friends out to do some diving 1 year. They put on wet suits and dove a wreck off the jackspot. Nice, No problem. On the way back in at maybe 60' of water there were pots strung out. always wondered what they were catching so one of the guys Went down, no wetsuit. Well, After 20' back up he came. To cold. Now this was the middle of the summer. This is why I ask this question. These fish dont live in the top 2-3' of the ocean so why do they care what the surface temp is ? Just one of the things that make me go Hmmmmmm.

Also, If the temp changes the deeper you go and I'm fishing on a boat with an 18" draft and another guy is fishing a boat with a 36" draft in a different spot, Both loking for Mr Mako, Both showing a temp of 64, Whos in the right spot ?

The predatory fish (tuna's, marlin, etc) may not live in the top 2-3' but they do often feed in the top 20'. In addition, hard temperature changes (especially in the early part of the season) cause bait to congregate which in turn draws predators.
