Suggestions - Bar Harbor, ME Area
The wife would like to head to Maine with the kids for a week or two in late June. She is focusing on the Bar Harbor area and has found a few cottages that will allow them to travel easily into town and also be convenient to hiking, quarries, and the lake(s) for fishing. I will try to go up and visit with them for a little while during their stay.
Anyone have suggetions on where to stay, places to visit, or things to do while there? I have never been to Maine and it has been many years since my wife has been that far north.
Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Don't know where to stay but suggest calling around now. As far as things to do the whole nat park is great and exploring the old harbour's and houses can be fun. The town has shops and normal tourest stuff. the blue nose ferry heads over to tyhe maritimes from there too.

Nimrod,
I spent a week there last summer... There are endless trails to hike and climb. Climb Cadillac Mountian. Bring a bike (road or mountian) if you are into that. Rent a 20ish foot CC boat and tour around. But fog and lobster pots are so thick you can walk on them so be careful. Get yourself some lobsters. Take a very fast dip in the ocean (like 20 seconds) or some of the lakes (like 2 minutes). Go on a whale watch, dolphin watch, seal watch, puffin watch, etc... Rock climb on the Otter Cliffs. Tour around the towns tourist traps is always good for a day.
If my 1 week of experience can help you, let me know. I do know a few people who are up there every summer. So I can probably get anything you need answered in more detail as well.

Schoodic Point is a good take in while you are there. It's part of Acadia National Park, but not physically connected. There is a very scenic road that runs along the edge of a good sized outcropping into Frenchman Bay on the west side, and the Gulf of Maine on the east. Lots of people ride their bikes out and back. I think you can rent bikes nearby for that purpose.
There is a park at the point where the view is special. Also, it is a great place to go see some pretty violent breaking waves during and just after any storms that produce big rollers. We used to try to time our visits for around high tide after a storm.
Have fun, it's a beautiful area.

Thanks!
Thank you for the input. Looks and sounds like a beautiful place. I think we are getting close to booking a cottage. I will report back when I know.

There is a tour boat company, Barharborwhales.com that runs a nature tour that is pretty cheap and cruises around the area it is worth the couple hours cruise also I think it was called Beal's is where we use to grub once in awhile but I heard they remodeled so don't know what to tell you now! I grew up in the fox islands just a little south of there and would cruise up to BH by boat at least once a summer to just spend the day it is as Downeast as Maine comes!!!PEACE
