Lets say you fly somewhere in the lower 48, then lose your wallet with your photo ID while you are there. How do you get back?![]()
Will the airlines let you back on with a Xerox copy?
If you have a passport, they will accept that in place of a DL. You can carry that in carry on luggage and your DL in your wallet.

I always carry a photo copy of my ID and my passport in my luggage. I've never had to use it but it's got to be better than nothing.

Good question. I have no idea. I've thought about that sometimes in other countries with respect to my passport, but haven't thought about the license thing. Looking forward to the answer.
My passport is in my computer bag and my license is in my wallet....
Other than that, you should carry photocopied versions of your personal documents.... but I never do.
I can tell you about the trip where my son's passport expired while we were in France, but that is a longer story....

Here in NC all ya got todo is spend $15.00 and get a valid,state-controlled,picture ID besides yur drivers-license.... keep id seperate from yur DL while traveling. (it saved my a$$ more then once.....)
Dont ask me how I know thisany way what they did to me was pull you aside and almost strip search you at every checkpoint and use up a lot of your at the bar time
They also asked my 8 year old twins my name and stuff as well as getting checked bags back and xraythem etc! BIG PITA! I dont recommend this at all
Get yourself a State ID card. Most state licensing agencies do them. They are also called non-driver ID cards.

ive learned that unless the id your showing them has a barcode on the back of it, or some kinda hologram on it, the intelligent tsa's wont accept it. when i go to work, i used to just take my uscg issued mmd, being as that gets me through port security (when i actually go into a port) and i wont be driving any wheeled vehicles while im at work. but i have learned that tsa's at the philly airport, lehigh valley airport, boston, new orleans, west palm, charlotte, houston dont even know what uscg stands for.
best bet... squirrel an id away inside your computer case, stitch in a sleeve and slide the id in there. if your ever in a bind, rip open the sleeve and your good to go... i got 3 secured this way. one on each of the bags i may wind up carrying.

Found myself in Bimini once without my passport. They wouldn't admit me into Bahamas with DL and Capt.'s license. Know what they finally DID accept?? A stinking voter registration card (no photo) from DE! The rules are generally arbitrary, and the officials capricious. If you don't have a required document, break out every scrap of paper, plastic, and photo you DO have. You probably have something that identifies you that a fraudulent traveller wouldn't bother to obtain. You mostly have to convince them that you are simply stupid and harmless.
Next, you can provide them with names/phone #'s of people who are expecting you. (Hint: don't give them anyone named Saddam or Hadij-that's prolly a showstopper.)
