My sister's 38' boat was struck by lightning while she was onboard with her husband and three children.......thought I would share her email.
Hi All, Well if you haven't heard yet, we were the Fireworks this 4th of July off Cambridge, MD on the Choptank River. Before deciding to anchor on the far side of the river. Clouds told us weather was not only unpredictable, but about to happen so we chose the most protected spot for protection that will still provide a great view of the fireworks. If you check the charts, the Choptank is as wide as the Nuese in NC.
Just for the record, Eric and I did a great job anchoring maybe because we already enjoyed an opportunity to reanchore this vacation in the dark against sheets of rain that stung the eyes. Only 2 other boats joined us. A cutty-cabin fishing style power boat with about 8 adults onboard, and another sailboat..
Around 8:00PM, things were just kicking-up way too much for my comfort, Tim's curiosity got the best of him, and he went outside to check the knot meter -- 40K Me, my eyes were on the boats that could make our excellent anchoring a living hell. I confirmed the boats were still far enough away, although only occasionally viewable with the 4 foot waves sheets of rain and 40K winds.
The insurance company wanted to know when it happened. I can tell you all this. I was standing, and so was Tim, and I think so was everyone else. Like we were in anticipation of something. What happened. Think of dropping a lightbulb. Multiply this by 1,000,000 watts or volts, of sound and light.
My first yell was about the shock running up my right pinkie finger, Tim and Brian yelled about the sparks off the back of the dingy. I only saw the bright orange off the solar panel and dinghy. Eric felt shock from the lightning, and so did little Lucy.
We all heard the BOOM.
No one was hurt, just scared!!!!!!
We lost connected electronics immediately, but as the anchor was
holding we weathered the storm. However over the next few days we returned to home port some other things worked initially and then failed.
This is truly odd thing -- the anchor and chain that was in the water is now
reddish/orange, before a galvanized color. Another oddity, there is a
scorch on the stainless steel at the base of only of the bimini supports.
Maybe needless to say, we lost pretty much all the navigation equipment.
