    Struck by lightning

My sister's 38' boat was struck by lightning while she was onboard with her husband and three children.......thought I would share her email.

Hi All, Well if you haven't heard yet, we were the Fireworks this 4th of July off Cambridge, MD on the Choptank River. Before deciding to anchor on the far side of the river. Clouds told us weather was not only unpredictable, but about to happen so we chose the most protected spot for protection that will still provide a great view of the fireworks. If you check the charts, the Choptank is as wide as the Nuese in NC.

Just for the record, Eric and I did a great job anchoring maybe because we already enjoyed an opportunity to reanchore this vacation in the dark against sheets of rain that stung the eyes. Only 2 other boats joined us. A cutty-cabin fishing style power boat with about 8 adults onboard, and another sailboat..

Around 8:00PM, things were just kicking-up way too much for my comfort, Tim's curiosity got the best of him, and he went outside to check the knot meter -- 40K Me, my eyes were on the boats that could make our excellent anchoring a living hell. I confirmed the boats were still far enough away, although only occasionally viewable with the 4 foot waves sheets of rain and 40K winds.

The insurance company wanted to know when it happened. I can tell you all this. I was standing, and so was Tim, and I think so was everyone else. Like we were in anticipation of something. What happened. Think of dropping a lightbulb. Multiply this by 1,000,000 watts or volts, of sound and light.

My first yell was about the shock running up my right pinkie finger, Tim and Brian yelled about the sparks off the back of the dingy. I only saw the bright orange off the solar panel and dinghy. Eric felt shock from the lightning, and so did little Lucy.

    We all heard the BOOM.
No one was hurt, just scared!!!!!!

We lost connected electronics immediately, but as the anchor was
holding we weathered the storm. However over the next few days we returned to home port some other things worked initially and then failed.

This is truly odd thing -- the anchor and chain that was in the water is now
reddish/orange, before a galvanized color. Another oddity, there is a
scorch on the stainless steel at the base of only of the bimini supports.

Maybe needless to say, we lost pretty much all the navigation equipment.

wow thats crazy. We were trying to outrun a lighting storm on Thrusday but it didn't work out and we were very lucky to get back in the harbor without getting hit by lightning. Glad to hear everyone is okay.

I was in the Bahamas (Walker Cay) about 15 years ago, trolling for Groupers, a dark black cloud came over us, and BOOM – the Boat next to us was running from this cloud and was hit by Lighting, all this electronics were cooked and this D-deck engine controls were stuck at full throttle, he had to shut the fuel valves to stop the boat! I saw & felt the lighting hit, my hair stood up! Cardinal Joe

Glad noone was hurt. Was returning to port not an option or was seeing the fireworks worth riding out a storm? I've always wondered if you could feel the shock of lightning if it hit a boat. Too bad they lost of all the electronic equipment but that stuff is nothing compared to the possibility of injury to the children.

Ben there done that more than I care to mention and each one is a life changing experience. Glad all are ok and funny that she uses the exact way to describe the sound as I do... A lightbulb pop. Louder n hell followed by the boom. Glad all are ok... Electronics can be replaced. Not people...

They were spending a week on the boat and were two days from home. Their boat is a sailing Catamaran with a 22' beam so finding a slip is not always easy.

BTW......they caught a 38" Striper (stealth) trolling under sail
