Stripers - Not North Carolina's Finest Hour

North Carolina Marine Fisheries Commission has apparently done it again, and to hell with any pretense of ethics. If the article linked below is even close to true (I have no reason to believe otherwise), it would be high time recreational fishermen everywhere to put a stop to this deplorable, BFM management of the resource. When you guys up the eastern seaboard make a water haul for stripers next year, be sure to think about how many of the fish found floating off NC might have made it back to where you are. Definitely not NC's finest hour ...

Funny how 2 people can be at the same meeting and here 2 different things. I'm not sure that Jeffery was there for what went on after lunch, or if he wanted to hear or report it.

The trawl boats were allowed to fish 1 more day to try and fill their quota of 60,000, this day is to be announced. The MFC is trying to keep a tight rope on this. Also the commission recommended that the boats hold their tow to 30 minuets max.

Anna Beckwitch pushed for the remaining 60,000 pounds be harvested as a hook and line fishery to be able to obtain data for next year fishery. With the state lawer there, during lunch, it was deturmed that the remaining allotment could not be harvested by hook and line due the the state law that states no Stripier taken by hook and line may be sold. During this year, work will be going forth to change this law so a hook and line fishery be formed to replace trawling...

I do feel that the MFC is doing the best they can with the laws that they have to work under.

Did any of you know that a lawyer has to be at each meeting to advise the commission the laws as ruling and changes are being made...

What about the Mikey Daniels conflict of interest captain Lee? Did you not feel that was a valid point? I think that any further "waste" of fish during commercial fishing operations would, at this point, be very unfortunate. The MFC had a chance to prevent that from happening, but they did not.
    Just trying to understand.

One needs to remember that the commission is made up of (if I remember right)
2 commercial fisherman, Mikey Daniels and Bradley Styron

1 Commercial Industry, Joseph J. Smith, Jr.

2 recreational, Edward L. Mann, Sr. and Darrell Taylor

1 Recreational Industry, Mac Currin ( whom I really like and will be off the board in June, he will be missed)

2 at large, W. Robert Bizzell and Anna Beckwith (Anna also has a background in marine research and fisheries.

    1 Scientist, Dr. B.J Copeland

and 2 advisers, a state lawyer and Dr. Louis Daniel, N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries. Neither have a vote.

That is about as evenly divided boars as it can be, now as top how everyone votes, that is another matter and after being at some of the meetings, I have formed an opinion as to who I like and who I am disappointed in, that I will keep to my self for now but anyone that would like to know in private, please call me.

You may obtain each members contact info to write them but beware of how you say things and keep it respectful and free from foul language if you wish to get your point across

A lot of this decision was based on what information was given by Dr. Louis Daniel that he had on hand which I think in this case was wrong or miss leading from Dr Daniel researchers and his recommendation to harvest the remaining quota with restrictions set forth.
I felt that Dr. Daniel had more to do with it than Mikey Daniels. The one question that I have about Mikey is that he has both interest in the commercial end as well as the Commercial Industry with he being part owner in a fish house with his brothers, this is where I feel there is some what of conflict of interest on the board.

OK, so all their rulings and changes were within 'the law'. What constitutes 'the law' is certainly a discussion for another day, but I think the main issue here is ethics. I have a copy of the audio enroute, so maybe that'll clear things up for me ...
