Don't know the place, but I sure know the critter! A couple of decades ago there used to be a lot of them off of Key West. I knew some guides who made serious money picking them up and making the run in with them. Jose Wejebe and I once saw a whole line of them drifting along. No, we didn't touch 'em, but it sure was a hard thing to do.

And they were a source for one of the funniest true stories that I have ever heard. It was told by Frank Johnson of Moldcraft. He and a pretty famous writer who might still be alive, so I won't mention his name or even say that he is or was a kind of "college professor" looking type, found a bail just before a tournament that the were fishing out of Bimini Bay Club. Water had gotten inside the bale, but the writer hacked off a chunk and told Frank "it'll still be good. We just have to dry it" and he snuck it ashore. Well, that night after dinner and cocktails and while esonched in one of the at time snooty and very upright Bay Club rooms, this guy got out a hair dryer and started using it to dry out his stash. Frank said that the guy was half in the bag and that his smeller "musta been broke", because the drying stunk up the place something fierce and created a smell like Woodstock at its peak. Naturally, they got busted and tossed off the premises and avoided the publicity and probably a jail sentence because of their notoriety and the Club not wanting a "drug taint" associated with it.

Frank said the writer guy was pissed and bitched and moaned about his stash getting taken away from him all the way back to the mainland.

Yeah, square grouper...the fisherman's friend. Just be careful at the end game and whatever you do, don't gaff it and get it wet! Nets only!

Good Fishing...Green grass and high times forever - dude!
