    Speckle trolling idea

I know many people troll for specks. Usually mirrolures, yo-zuri's, or smithwicks. Has anybody ever tried making a daisy chain out of tubes or grubs for trolling speckles? If it works offshore for Tuna/dolphin/marlin wouldn't it work for inshore species as well. I made a 4 tube chain last night with chartreuse tubes from strike king. It looks good, but I don't know if it will work. Especially if a blue fish hits the second tube and cuts the 12 lb flouro.

I use a split shot to keep the tubes from falling and figure the weight will help keep it down. The front three grubs are 9 inches apart with a #5 splitshot to keep from sliding. I pull the tube tight to the splitshot. The "hook bait" is a 1/4 oz leadhead with the tube on it, and it is 9 inches apart also. I thought about running a straight hook like you would do freshwater worm fishing but opted for the weight to keep it down.

Any of ya'll think this will work or did I just waste 4 tubes?

therein lies the problem that first popped in my head when i read your idea....the bluefish have been voraciously attacking my mess this week while trout fishing. other than that, hell, give it a shot and let us know what happens .

Let us know how it works! I have noticed a distinct difference in the number of strikes recieved on the tandom jig vs. the single. May trigger some sort of predator/prey type response. Good luck with the blues.

As far as spec trolling ideas, have you ever used planer boards to sweep the creek on both sides. usually boat traffic prevents this from being possible around here. The planer boards do work well in keeping the boat away from the fish.

I use planer boards in open water (like the Poqouson Flats or Back river) Not as many boats and hte area is big enough that there is no interference. If you can get into HOT places with no boats then planer board may just be the way to go.

hey Byrd- how gozit dude- i see that purty speck in your avatar now!!! Dont blame you I would too. There are quite a few trollers in lynnhaven although you dont see them up the bridge way in Lynnhaven. As plentiful as they are this year it might not make much difference but normally they spook very easily. That is why most use those freshwater trolling motors on smaller size boats. Then take and use grubs and put em way back . Fingd a spot where they are and just start your pattern. Very good way to fish. I have caught greys on those tandom shad darts before but never caught more than 1 speck at a time. good luck- craig

    HOLWHACHAGOT and Miles:

How are you rigging the tandem jigs?

I will post a picture or two tonight. Very simple though. I use 30-40 pound Flouro. About a four foot piece. Tie a surgeons loop a about 1-1/2' down. 1/4 or 3/8 leadhead on the short piece. 3/8 to 1/2 lead on the long tag end. Very simple. Very effective. I will post pictures of the weighted and unweigted set-ups that I like to use. Check back tonight. HOLWACHAGOT

Thanks, I'll check back later. I've always targeted redfish and trout were a by-catch. Lately, I've been enjoying targeting trout with artificials but not really too succesful yet so any tips will help. I've heard of the tandem jig but never seen one tied or talked to anyone who has used them. Look forward to seeing it. Thanks in advance for the info.

pretty much the same as Holwachagot except i use the heavier jig on the shorter line- keeps it from getting tangled as easy-

There's an older fella that fishes Rudie in a john boat that fishes a tandem rig. He makes it out of crappie jigs of all things. It seems to work well for him, but I've never tried the crappie jigs myself.
I've watched a guy work planer boards in a 13 foot whaler in a pretty tight spot. That dude had 12 lines going off that little boat, and was all by himself. He was the only troller I saw catch fish that day.
