I removed much of the wiring and plumbing, what was left that I wasn’t replacing, I removed from the hull and covered and suspended. I did a couple of rounds of cleaner/degreaser and pressure washing and a whole lot of coarse sanding to rough up the surface and then more cleaning and shop vacuuming. I used the cheap plastic drop clothes to tent in the engine room to minimize overspray. I sprayed the coating on with two thick coats to the recommended thickness. You need a good compressor and the right gun. I tried a couple spray guns and ended up just using the cheap undercoating spray gun kit they offer with the material. It worked okay, but you need to be careful of sagging. You get kind of an orange peel like finish (a little bit dimply). I did not like the final finish of the material for under the engine beds. It was kind of an ivory color and a flat finish that would seem to have a tendency to absorb and stain. I ended up over coating the floor portion of the engine room with a white interlux bilgekote. Overall it came out good and I am happy with it. Given the amount of prep work involved, I would consider just an awlgrip finish for durability. I don’t intend on redoing this anytime soon!
As for the silencing properties, the boat is definitely quieter; however, I did so much at the same time it is hard to say if it is due entirely to the silent running coating. Both engines were completely rebuilt, new motor mounts all around and some good neoprene hatch tape was used around the engine room seal. The coating was expensive, I think I spent a grand on the coating alone.
On another extreme, a good friend had a 38 Out Island built last year and he had them spray the entire inside of the hull with the coating and then awlgrip over the top of it while the boat was being built. Don’t have anything to compare it to, but I will say the boat is quiet and any hull slap is deadened.

Thanks Will. I don't know that I have the energy to do my whole engine room again, as I Imron coated it just a 3 seasons ago. Despite having an organic vapor cartridge mask on, I was breathing and sweating out the VOC's for weeks. i was thinking about just the muffler system for now. While my Cat C-12 generate a lot of noise, I can imagine that the mufflers and related pipe carry a lot of noise back to the transom, transmitting noise through the hull. The other issue I have is that the mufflers, despite being replaced when I repowered just don't knock down the noise enough at cruise. I wonder if this coating would help with that. seems that it would.

I hear you about not doing the engine room again, EVER! This coating was water-based and easy to work with. It is so heavy and thick that overspray and airborne vapors are not a problem. As you know, sound is produced by vibration and vibration can be transferred from material to material. So if you are getting a resonance from your mufflers and surrounding area, then this stuff will help some. Don’t expect miracles, but I would say based on my experience with the product that you can expect some dampening. Good luck…

I think Admin is going to let me have this space
Here is what I used, http://www.armstrong.com/commceiling...oductLineId=94
Make up a few panels to affix to the bottom of hatches or flat surfaces, works the balls.
