ok, any boat with people on board that may resemble a pirate.

The problem is the really resemble fishermen, until its too late, not nit picking details, but I am speaking from first hand experience it is really hard to differentiate fishermen and pirates.

Its a tough situation which would best be served by eliminating shipping and boating traffic in that area, very possible, but instead we choose to waste US military resources so foreign flag shipping companies can save money by taking that shortcut to western Europe and the med. And that is ALL it is, a shortcut that is saving foreign flag shipping companies money, there is basically no other reason to be in that area, baring a very few exceptions. One of which is the grain relief ships that deliver grain to Djibouti.

A bit of history recent though it might be -

Pirates are from whole cloth of fisherman - when you don't have a coast guard and other countries plunder your resources you might find yourself in a Panga, armed and going for it.

Further - the toxic waste disposal off the coast of Somali is another tragedy. Warlords, no civil structure, and the profit motive screwing up international shipping and peoples lives. Not saying any of it is right, but try and feel good paying taxes and when the trash is picked up.

Plus if you're stupid enough to sail into this area, you almost deserve it, a bunch of my drunken Gloucester buddies tried the same thing, sailed around the world in a steel sailboat though, and packing plenty of weapons....when the pirates attacked them, the Gloucester men killed them all, some said they went looking for it.....oh well....."Gloucester, there always from Gloucester".........I wouldn't got there even with Tunanut's boat.....
