Most people walk behind the boat and just laugh and don't bother asking but those that do are often surprised at what Nimrod really means.
We put Nimrod on the transom of our first Hatteras back in 1984 using the meaning we found in the dictionary and in the bible. If you look it up http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/nimrod you will find that it means 'great or mighty hunter'. Nimrod was 'a mighty hunter under the lord' and the great-grandson of Noah. We figured we were hunters of fish so it kinda fit.
It took a couple of years for us to realize the other more common use of Nimrod - someone regarded as foolish, silly, or stupid. We considered changing the name then realized that the more common meaning might describe us (and many who own boats) more accurately anyway.![]()
So there you have it. As we see it Nimrod means 'mighty hunter'. But if you would rather use Nimrod to describe us as foolish, silly, or stupid that's ok too. I've been called much worse!![]()
