    SHEEPSHEAD SCHOOL...

Any one ever been taken to school by a Sheepshead? Just wondering... Maybe some of the NC Boys can give us a few tips how to catch them. I hear they catch em every now and then down in Wilmington area...Anybody know for sure if they get over a pound...pound and a half down there? I am just wondering because I got spooled by a croaker on my cane pole the other day and I heard those sheeps pull even harder...Prolly just another rumor.

they take me to school every time i try to catch one. if you have trouble getting spooled by a croaker you better get a bigger set up to catch sheeps head,

you need a good stiff rod that you can feel a soft bite on, braided line works good (50 to 80 lb ), a good reel with a really good drag , and i use a #1 live bait hook , ive seen some around bogue inlet pier that would weigh close to 8 or 10 lbs if not more and they will tare you mess up, but God what fun to try

I can give you a few hints..... Haven't fished for them for a while. But in this area I use 20 test on a 6500 and a stout 7ft rod. a # 1/0 live bait hook with a twist of wire. The wire doesn't have to be heavy and only use a short piece about 10 to 12 inches, use a albright to attach to the mono. these fish have gopher typr teeth and will chew right through mono! The best place in this area is the Bonner bridge at slack tide. Bait is sand fleas and fish them right on the pilings working them up and down the pilings until you find what depth the fish are in. I 've seen fish up to 13 lbs and they are damn good eating! Hope this helps.

I don't even try. I once watched 20 sand fleas baits in a row get their meat sucked out by convicts w/o a single hook up.
Them things will drive you crazy, especially in the clear water we usually have down this way.
When I catch one by accident, though, I exact my revenge at the dinner table. They eat good!

i have reloaded on bait at low tide today and have decided to go with a little lighter tackle today. hopefully that slob jailbird has gotten the taste of Mustad tinged fiddler out of his mouth and is ready for more this evening. i am armed with plenty of cold beer too.....its a hot one here today.

dont worry mr wachagot....ill show your virginia ass how we do it down here sooner or later

Matt, I know where your coming from,I went a couple yrs.ago with some old salts that I fish with on occassion, who can catch anything inshore anyday of the wk. no matter what the conditions. They were catching 10 to my 1,and laughing the whole time at my redneck ass,and I asked them what I could do to improve my catch ratio and there answer was SET THE HOOK BEFORE THEY BITE!!!!! I got my ass handed to me that day,and haven't done much better since.
