Big Game Fishing Magazine published an article a few years back by the late captain Billy Verbanas on shark fishing. Call Big Game more info than you will need to get started.

Just be sure you know what you are getting into if you ever wrap your hand with a cable leader. Deep C posted on of the best informative posts on shark fishing you will find anywhere. Do a search on his name and you will find it. I personally don't use all of his techniques but it's a great starting point and you can work out what you like from there. In addition to that many of us have added some other great tips in a few other posts that have popped up lately.

This is not something I would reccomend.
You'd be surprised just how strong a "little mako" can be,
all muscle and a bad attitude.
Lots of info on sharking available.

    Good luck and be carefull.

I have been sharking for a long time now and would like to share a little info, something I dont like to do, however I am new to this site and If I share some info I may need some in the future and would most likly get from you guys on the site. For one when sharking it is best to have somewhat of a brease so your boat gets a better drift.I power chum at 5 knots for about 2 miles and then I shut down the engines. I have been on peoples boats that say they know how to shark fish but really dont. The most important thing to remember is that when you chunk you want to be consistant with your chunks. I use mack and bunker flats to get me started. When the blue fish come in I will get them for bait and use them. If for some reason the shark are not at boat side in 1 hour I like to bang the bottom of my gaf on the boat so it makes a thumping noise that travells in the water. Shark are more interested in noise than the blood. If you have a spot on the boat that you can bang that makes a good sound without doing damage to your boat then that is the best thing you can know. Try it it really works. For 2 dont gaf a big mako without knowing what you are doing. Try getting some smaller ones first to get some leader experiance. Make sure everyone on the boat is paying close attention to the shark, since they are fast to jump, swim ect.. when you leader the shark do not rap your hands in the leader and make sure the man on the pole has the drag set down and the tip of the pole down incase you have to let the leader go. When you gaf the shark be careful.

Yeah that was my point. Capt. Billy was wrapped in cable when that mako took him out of the boat. That's why I don't use cable.
