Even coming from Marine!!! Frank
During that process their families would starve.
Given your fondness for social movements as you describe them above where the Mexicans might "turn around" their country, might I assume that you share a similar fondness for the Occupy movement, Frank?
Aren't they doing here what you propose the Mexicans do there?

Many good points made in alot of these posts, and let me preface this with saying that I too have met many Mexicans that are more 'American' (in the best sense and meaning of the word) than actual 'Americans' I know solely because they were born here. I think that you could say that about any group. And though you hear alot of comments about '...cans...', the reality is most people are not the bigots we're made out to be.
Living in the South Florida area we are always coming into contact with people who have left their country and are here (legally or not). And it's not just the Mexicans. Honduras & El Salvador (as examples) both have gang problems that literally cause people to flee for their lives. Ask anyone who visited Costa Rica (specifically San Jose) in the early to mid eighties - my first visit there was in 1980 as a surfer - and they will tell you that '...things have changed...and not necessarily for the better'. No sportsman on this website can deny the beauty and the bounty of Venezuela, but who in their right mind would live there, or ever think to make an investment there with a despot such as Chavez or a political climate that offers zero stability. Hell if you're on the wrong side of the political spectrum someone could be knocking on your door tomorrow morning. We don't know that in this Country. No, I understand why they come here.
Take a good look at Mexico. It is truly a blessed land. They border two oceans. They have mountains and deserts, they have tropics and plains and rivers. They have oil for God's sake, gobs of it. They are blessed with every natural resource that God could possibly gift to man. You could make the arguement that it's one of the best fishing destinations in the world. It is, truly, a Sportman's paradise. But - it's f***ed up...
As to the reason why they can't turn their country around or effect change. LF says it - it's the government and politics - the 'system' if you will Frank - the corruption is so great that the average guy can't put his arms around it, much less solve it. It will take a real leader & a people who are willing to sacrifice to effect a positive change. Sound familiar? It's what we are all whining about in this Country (for the past thirty years at least).
Many people don't get it, but it's politics and policies (government) that come first, always. The economy follows. Always. Not the other way around. Don't have a good government? 'Garonteed' you won't have a good economy either. It doesn't work that way, and never did.
LF you make a good point regarding the Occupy Movement. You also make an interesting point regarding NAFTA -I gotta digest that a bit, but it only illustrates how a well intentioned plan can have unintentional & unforeseen (read disastrous) consequences. But if you want Frank (and others) to see your point of view, you must also see the Tea Party in the same light, regular everyday people (not 'terrorists' as some in the left wing media have described them), that have finally been forced to vocalize, in a public manner, their displeasure as to how things are going. We should all get a refresher on the early days of our Country and the environment which led to our 'revolution'.
The Mexican government is disconnected from the Mexican people, and like an aircraft carrier steaming at 30+ knots, you aint going to change its course 'right now'. It's the same s*** here, but not to the same level - yet - I hope we can dummy up for all of our and our families sakes.
Actually, I had high to very high hopes for the Tea Party. But I think the Republicans have coopted them (think Bachmann) just as the Dems are trying to coopt the OWS movement (no success so far, though).
It's useless self-deception to claim to be an independently-inspired, grass-roots opposition party when you join the ranks of established parties. That's why I vote Libertarian every chance I get.

I thought it was an interesting read and to tell you the truth I really don't have a problem with NAFTA.
In my travels I have generally found that those countries settled by Spain have corrupt governments since graft and bribery are vocally abhorred but totally expected and accepted. Those countries settled by England for the most part have a much higher respect for the rule of law and give the dog serious teeth when it comes to punishing graft and bribery. When those with money can pick and choose which laws they wish to follow corruption will keep the masses at peasant levels. But then, I love Mexico, in part because I know I can probably buy a level of freedom not possible in the USA or Canada.
But for the corruption in Mexico that keeps all the wealth confined to the very few I don't think NAFTA would have hurt the country as severely as it has. Canada has gained as much or even more that it lost with NAFTA. Sad that the same cannot be said for Mexico.
There may be some that take offense to your reasoning. I don't, because I see you are speaking from your own experience. I have never heard of a comparison as you gave, between English and Spainish settled area's. I appreciate the view, as you see it. Frank
