This is a real long shot but if anyone hears or knows of anyone looking to move about 400+ spot fast over the next few days that usually wouldn't be selling them in the SJ area can you shoot an email to Paul.Zgalich@boostmobile.com.
Most likely they have new homes in a new pen already but figured I'd throw this out there.
Lets just say for the second year in a row a large investment dissapeared overnight and it wasn't the otters getting into the hidden locked pens with bolt cutters...
crooks are pieces of dog sheet......and unfortunately its probably someone close by...sure hope we don't find you one day
Ahh...sorry to hear that...and I guess I should of asked what ARE spot, not is. Those look alittle bit like our black drum down here (less the stripes)...or croakers. Good bait.
Bones, so the thief hit you guys as well. He got Jim's B&T a couple of weeks ago for about 800 and also hit most of the boats over in SJ Marina. Most of us think it's somebody coming in by boat and hitting the pens. BTW, you might want to call Trooper Brian McGuire w/the State Marine Police to file the report, he's working heavily w/any Marina related thefts. Phone # (856)785-1684, this is the BiValve Marine Police Station.
Just so everyone in the SFC community can relate Live Spot goes for $3.50 retail and the local bait shops have been purchasing them from suppliers as far away as Virginia. So you can see that this is no petty theft or small crime, this can really ruin not only a fisherman's season (400 spot = $1400), but the small B&T shops as well.
If anyone comes across these scumbags, please feel free to call Trooper McGuire at the # listed above.
please pardon my ignorance but could someone give me a quick rundown on targeting tuna with spot? rigs, leader, when and where. I've never heard of this before- I guess a few of us NC guys are behind the times.
Allota guys will add them to their chunking slick. Some also use them off of kites while chunking. When the fish are held up on the lumps and not taking trolled baits chunking with live spot in the mix can load fish in the box when others are having a poor day!
They are also used when chunking during overnighters.
This type of thievery is why public punishment should still be in effect. Hangum high!
Not me Mary but they got Paul's pens North of you and he did a lot of work getting them this year with the help of another guy. Real big hit in the pocket for him and he's not happy. Second year in a row somebody cleaned out his pens. Last year about 300 in prime season, this year 400. He had some custom tops made for the pens this year but nothing is fool proof.
Hotrod - Real easy, not sure if you do any chunking down there with butters or overnight but same basic rig - 50# flouro, circle hook put through their back and let 'em live line out there in the slick and keep peeling off the line, you can also put 'em down under a balloon (similar to a shark set-up) set em down 30-40 feet and just wait for the run off. Great bait. We do the same thing with mullet if we can get them big enough if there are no squid out there. Also, they are used with weight chunking for bluefins over the lumps. They are tuna and striper candy. For stripers most put them on an open bait runner and send them down to their death as they go over a rip into a striped ones mouth. They keep well in a bait pen especially if you feed them. $3.50 - $4.00 is a nut for these things if you don't catch them in the late summer and have a safe place for them. Somedays if you don't have live spot you ain't catching. Eels just don't cut it all the time. When you are fishing the tides and only have 4 or so good hours they are worth every penny. If the bluefish are around you don't even put 'em in the water.
Never F with a man's boat, his wife, or his spot in prime striper season
