Don't think it's a good idea to brag about fighting dolphins.

By the way, I'm in no way bashing Capt. Jeff. Just want to make that clear. Just hate to see him get jumped by some PETA people lurking on here or something. That's all.
well this sux![]()
we dont bash any1 around here, but as you say he might have rewritten that paragraph in a better way. Dolphins are not supposed to be fished!![]()
I wouldnt even know what to do if I had one on the line? Should i cut the line as fast i as could? or shoudl I try to get back as much line possible so the dolphin would not have to carry 43245545345 metres of line?
This is the 1st time i hear a dolphin got hooked![]()
I snagged one trolling once. it was pure accident and I cut the line as soon as it happened. Just happens sometimes.
I'm sure they can be hooked by accident. I remember last year in the Swansboro Tourny when the BEAST had is spread out and a school (pod, whatever) of bottlenose came in and eye-balled those baits for a long time. There was probably only one brain cell that stood between them and a hook-up. If your baits look good, you can fool them. Look at how many dumb-ass humans there are out there.....
Once hooked, I think you should fight it as hard as possible to get the line back and cut it loose as soon as you have the opportunity. To think you should cut it loose once you ID it and leave yards of line trailing behind is just foolish. PETA has just as many pics of dolphin tangled in mono as they do dolphin caught in nets.
Now if he targeted the dolphin, killed it, and sold it, then we might have a good ole' fashioned ***** session going. But if it hits the bait, you're stuck dealing with the situation. I've foul-hooked plenty of sea turtles trolling and you have to bring them in (and the SOB's fight) so you can remove the hook from their flippers, and then let them go. That doesn't make you a bad person, just do the best with the hand you're dealt.
But I agree, some stories are best left off the internet, if for nothing else, to not fuel those looking for a fight.
i often wondered what i'd do if we hooked one? what should i do? anybody know? fight the dolphin or cut it loose? just curious so i can make the right decision if there is one.
I may be wrong, but I thought the law says that if you knowingly catch a mammal that it's illegal? If I hook a dolphin, whale, etc. shouldn't I cut the animal loose to not break the law? I understand about the trailing mono issue, but I still can't explain that in front of a judge if that's not the law.
I could keep my mouth shut, but what if I have a charter on board and they tell? I just want to know the law here.
I say cut it. The hook will rust out overtime.
But I wonder what are effects to the releasing a Dolphin vs Billfish.
I understand where you are coming from John
it sounds like he's bragging and he said "I had this one right next to the boat a few times.."It’s not the first time I’ve hooked a bottlenose and they really put on a good fight. The big advantage to angling one is that they have to come up to breath. When they do, you can gain a lot of line backing the boat to them. I had this one right next to the boat a few times
it sounds like he likes to catch them. I'm not a tree hugger and I have snagged a dophin or two and whales but you do your best to try and do whats right for the animal, AND YOU DON"T POST IT ON A PUBLIC FISHING WEBSITE. That's not only a fine but jail time. I think him just posting could get him in trouble. That’s one of the coolest things about fishing the ocean.
That post seems very wrong- I'm not trying to bash him so I'm sorry if this comes across as a bash
One cannot control what hits the line. I don't see where he was targeting dolphin. It appears to be a by-catch of shark fishing from what I read. Sounds to me like he may have even be in awe that he had it one the line to start with.
