Your engine code is the 8th digit of your vin number and your engine size is listed on the emissions label under the hood of every car or truck so how are they concealing it from you?

When something goes wrong with the system, the check engine light comes on, known as "throwing a code." That is what I'm referring to, the dealers want to make it unreadable for regular mechanics, so that you'll have to take your car back to the dealer for repairs....usually much more expensive than the average repair shop. Just had the timing belts and water pump changed in my Accord...$1,000 at the dealer, $600 at my mechanic of 30 years...

Please don't take any offense to this but you need to find a new mechanic that has up to date diagnostic equipment. Any half decent scanner will give you a code and the code definition so we know what the code is for. Sounds to me like your mechanic doesn't want to do diagnostic work on your car so he is trying to push you off to the dealer.
