    Rigging bench

I need some ideas and help with the design of a work station in my basement for rigging.

I am currently taking the next step in offshore fishing and want to get more hands on with the rigs that I will be using.

I am laying out my basement for a complete re-model and want to allocate an area for rigging. I already have a large woodworking shop in the basement, but I want to set up a seperate area to work on my fishing crap. (lots of solvents, glue, dust, ect... in the wood shop)

What kind of space do you guys think that I will be comfortable with. I am new to this but I want something that I can grow into and not out of.

What are the must haves for the work bench.

Pictures would be great if possible.

I am planning on doing all paneled walls in the bar area and want to design something that could possibly fold down from the wall. Similar to a murphy bed.

Any suggestions would be a great help.

    Thanks.

I like the island rigging station..cabinets under on both sides. A full sheet of ply for the top. If laying out spreader bars....mark off the lengths for repetitive mono cuts. The perimeter walls have all the shop tools. Those tops are half sheets of ply/cabinets under. Some are full drawer bases and some are single/double bases. Find some one removing an old kitchen and use the base cabinets. They work out nice and mucho storage.

    Thanks for the replies.

Nice set up austin ensor. Thanks for the pic.

I am going to be setting this space up in my bar area so I don't really want to use old kitchen cabinets.

I am going to build all the cabinetry myself so it matches the paneled walls that I am installing throughout. I am thinking of using cherry or walnut. The wife doesn't want it too dark so I will most likely us the cherry.

What I was really looking for was advice on what bench mounted tools and the space needed for those tools (a bench crimper comes to mind)

Good point on the large work surface for spreader bars Flat. I will make it big enough to work on some of the larger bars.

    Thanks again

If you're ever in the area stop by. I don't know how much room you will set aside in the basement but you can take a walk thru our shop and you might get some great ideas.

    Wow,

    Thanks Chuck,

I would love to stop by and take a look. That's quite the set-up you have over there. I'm sure that I could get some great ideas.

I think my setup will need to be a bit more compact

A good vice and a bench mounted crimping tool would be excellent additions.

Nothing Fancy and this is all work in Progress

I found an Industrial type steel covered work Bench, one of the main things is that it is solid, especially if you want to add a bench crimper that is on my wish list in addition to some shelves that small plastic totes will fit on for terminal tackle

and for light rigging any table will do ,I like to be able to slide a chair under the bench to get over my work

and don't forget extra good lighting ,it really helps for the late night sessions

I keep all my finished rigs in Totes that are labeled for inshore and offshore and are ready to go at a moments notice

I don't have the room for a dedicated workbench, but some of the things I've found handy on a regular workbench are:

A ruler tape stuck on the front edge for measuring leaders.

A rod holder that you can attach to the side of the workbench or clamp in a vise is really handy for servicing reels, setting drags and other rod work.

A pegboard back wall gives you a place to hang tools and spools and keeps them off the work area.

Wood dowels stuck into a corner or edge are handy to loop a leader or hook on so you don't need three hands to tighten knots. I also use them for testing the strength of some smaller rigs with a spring scale. Be careful about where the hooks will end up if the rig breaks.
IE8 says this may be a phishing site....Well, DUH!!!!!!... Stupid jerks can't even spell fishing right.
