Lots of people want details of tournament fishing and what its like to chase the fish like I do. Well its not only fishing that makes up the life of a travelling tournament guy. Driving from Florida can be an adventure itself.
This run was...
At the 150 mile mark I saw a minivan like mine go into a slick exit ramp a bit on the quick side and laid it over. I've seen a couple roll overs but this was about as mild as I could imagine one being. The thing went on its side on hard slick grass and then up on to the roof where it gently slid. I ran up and could see the driver was freaked out but un injured. I also noticed that there was barely a scratch on the vehicle. I helped the fellow out and waited til the FHP showed up.
The next few hundred miles were unremarkable until I reached Santee SC. It was there that as I crossd lake Marion I could see near hurricane force wind screaming across it as part of the down flow from a way big thunderstorm...
Entering the bellly of the beast lightning was solid and the wind screamed as deluges of water poured from the heavens. I slowed to a comfortable speed and took a defensive stance. As I rolled along I could only think of small boats and wondered if they were all ok.
"Comfortable spped" is a relative term. I saw both extremes though. For some its to slow to a near stop of 5-10 mph. Thats almost as dangerous as going to fast as they are sitting ducks for faster moving traffic. Sure enough I watched a car get side ways ducking one of the slow pokes. Then there was a big Excursion that roared past me doing full clip. He hit a big puddle and the ego man found out quick that the big beefy super suv "skipped" on deep water like any other car... He got lucky and got it right...
The storm eventually petered out and I rolled to the VA/NC border. Bad weather and late hour had me choose that as a place to stop. I had stayed at this place before. Though 46 years young the clerk always drops the AARP discount on me![]()

Tired or not its tough to sleep after 800 miles of rockin and rollin. THe ice machine next to the room and every kid in the hotel compelled to play with it makes it tougher yet. Eventually blissfull sleep in a strange bed comes to me.
I blink and its a new day. I down a cup of coffee flavored sludge and continue on my pilgrimage. Then a silver suv pulls up and makes some hand signals. I recognize the logo in the window as friendly and its our own Therms Man!He has spotted my SFC decal. We pull over and shoot the breeze for a while...Things are good and we continue our own ways...
A traffic jam in Delaware has me irritated. Not at the jam but the driver in front of me applying make up and primping with no hands on the wheel. It was a man!I contine through the jam and see where some other sleepy sob had rear ended an innocent car carrying a father and little boy on their way fishing... The innocents car was burried deep in the brush along the road and I could see the rods still sticking out the back window. The boy clung to the troopers leg as the wrecker was directed to pull it free...
Eventually I make it to Castle Deep north but not without a lady running a stop sign and having me test the brakes one last time...![]()
ANyway I'm here and looking to go kill stuff in a very short while. I am pumped and on my game. Deep is back in town!![]()
