Resume

Has anyone used a resume writing service? I need to rewrite my resume to include more specific information. One of the issues Im having is length. Ive been told that to catch an HR managers eye, your resume should only be one page, and I cant quite seem to make that happen. My other issue is I dont want to spend the money and not get results. I know they cant promise a job, but I want to make sure that Im dealing with some one who knows how to put the pertinent info out there in a way that HR type people want to see. I want someone who knows how to ask me the questions needed to get the right info on paper that sells my capabilities. Any help, info, advice or contacts would be appreciated.

Resume

Nautiduck,

A resume can be any length, but my suggestion would be to contact several people in the job field you are looking to get hired into and ask if they would fax you their resume. most professionals would be willing, but we call it a "Curriculum Vitae". Look for people who are successful in your field and get their resumes as examples.

Good luck!

Nautiduck-

Forget the 1 page resume philosophy unless it's your first job out of high school. If you have pertinent information that needs to be seen by a recruiter/ manager/ HR person, then it needs to be in there. I'm married to an HR manager with one of the big pharma corporations and I hear it all the time. She gets resumes from some of these people that are 4-5 pages thick and requires a science book just to figure out what the hell they are saying they've accomplished. For your purposes, I would keep it to 2-3 pages max. That gives you the room to state your case as to why you're the best person for the job but not put the recruiter/ HR person to sleep.

Before anyone gets any ideas, I can't help anyone get a job. My wife's company has a systematic process that has to be followed to the letter and I wouldn't have any better chance than a man on the moon if I wanted to work there.

If you have to include lots of technical information or qualifications having more than 1 page is fine. Mine is 2 ½ pages, because it lists my various qualifications and technical information.
Like someone mentioned see if you can get up with someone that is working in the job you are applying for a look at the length and format of theirs.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate the help and the offers. I was in the construction industry as a site manager and most recently a project manager, but with the industry as slow as it is, there is alot of competition for fewer jobs from guys that have been working at senior levels. So I need to figure out how to tailor my resume to cover different career fields. Thats the main reason Im looking for info on either a resume service or a decent head hunter. Im not really sure what other career fields my skill set will be applicable. I havent really done a job search like this before, my employment switches before were usually through company advancement or from working contacts either approaching me or vice vesa when I was ready for a change. Unfortunately most of the companies my contacts work for are either in a freeze or downsizing. I'll go ahead and start adding the info to it and see what I end up with. Im sure I will be asking more questions as I go. Thanks again guys I really appreciate the help.

Duck Miester,

I really don't like all the BS that is put in most resume's. Most important is I'm mature, sober and know how to be to work on time! Seem's foolish, but that's really what's missing from our work force now-a-day's. Frank

Well Frank I am mature, at least at work, I dont drink, Im always on time usually early, and I work my butt off it makes the day go faster. Oh Ive never been arrested, I dont smoke pot (or cigarettes) or do other illicit drugs. Im just trying to figure the best way to put all of that in a resume, along with my working skills.

Duck Miester,

I haven't applied for a job in quite some time. What ever happened to a firm hand shake, lookin the prospective boss dead in the eye and tellin em' who you were and what you can do? Not tryin to be smart here, really. I get a resume from someone from time to time myself. I just think that a person can put anything (embelish) in a resume, true or not. Give me a few minute's person to person, I can tell if I want that person around or not. I guess times have really changed. How about the guy that has ton's of great experience, but isn't very eloquent on paper? Just wondering. Frank
