They are illegal in Va. My brother swears by them but he has more tickets than I do. If you get pulled and they see one you are pretty much guaranteed to get a ticket. I like letting someone bird dog for me. If your travelling interstates a CB is your best bet. The truckers always know where the somkeys are. with alot of troopers going to instant on on radar you are caught before you know it.

    RADAR DETECTORS

Don't waste your money. The only way a detector saves you is if you are on a straight piece of road and you are way behind other cars speeding. You might catch an instant of the radar being activated for the speeders in front. If you're in front of the pack, or solo, or there is enough space between cars to get seperate readings and the officer visually estimates your speed and thinks you're a good catch (for me when I was working the road, it was 75+ in a 55 zone. Why f*ck with the small fries when I know usually within a couple of minutes I'm gonna get someboby doin' 80+) you're done. There would be times during the summer when the "Baltimorons" going to OC on the weekend, I wouldn't have a citation under 85. And that was probably only catching one tenth of them. What are the odds of catching the same person going to OC and then back across the bay on the same weekend out of the thousands of cars passing through. Did it more then once. Idiots.
Laser is totally different. The beam is only pencil thin. It hits each car indiviually and only takes a fraction of a second. It can pick cars up from 1/2 a mile away +. I could get the speed of several vehicles within a few seconds and with a stopping team could pull several cars over at one time. I would have their exact speed and distance in feet. Laser detectors are worthless.
VASCAR is even better. A computer instantly computes distance divided by time. Determines an average speed to the tenth of a mile per hour. No radar/laser energy to be picked up by a detector. All you need is a starting point and an ending point. Could be anything: a shadow on the road, road signs, pre measured VASCAR stripes on the road. Can operate it moving, stationary, following or leading traffic. Sitting stationary with a pair of binnoculars on a preset course or from an airplane, it was deadly. People wouldn't have a clue.
If you had any type of detector and got caught, shame on ya. Would love the ones who would try to hide them. Sign here.

One thing Ive been noticing though, the cops are getting smart to them. I notice that some cops wont put the radar on until your about 100 feet away from them which in turn means your busted. You dont have enough time to react.
Someone told me that you can purchase a radar jammer, I dont know how reliable these are.
The VA law about detectors being illegal is true, although I owned a car that had a built in radar detector. It was so well hidden under the dash and the actual beem omitted came from the front bumper and the warning lights would show in the instrument cluster.

    Ok here's the low down....

I have a Valentine 1 and never get speeding tickets. There's a few things you need to know though.

There's a few types of radar cops use. Most Cops run regular band radar which is easily picked up by all detectors. There's a few types x,k,ka but none of that really matters.

Of those bands the worst is the POP radar which they pull a trigger and it sends the beam to you. So your detector will only pick it up when they "hit" you, or conveniently enough the car ahead of you. So...all in all, not bad.

The real ******* is laser. All detectors pick up laser BUT the problem is, once you know you've been "shot" its too late. He already has your speed. Rarely, and i do mean rarely, you will get the bounce off the car ahead.

NJSP on the Parkway and Tpike use laser. Only thing about laser is that they need a straight away to shoot. Doesn't work on curves, or in reduced vis.

Radar is illegal to jam, but laser you may interfere with because laser is reg'd by the FDA, NOT the FCC. However the efficacy of laser jammers remains to be seen.

I love my V1. If i was going to buy one it would be the Passport or V1. Don't bother with the cheap radio shack crap.

    I speed ALL the time. Not recklessly. If it's a 40 i'll do 50

    If it's a 65 i'll do 75.

I have a bell built in radar I used in 3 different cars. I NEVER got a ticket while driving. It has 3 sensors one in the grill, one in the front window and one in the rear. The only problem I have w/ it is the sensitivity around certain shopping centers. It may read the automatic doors causing it to go off. I would much rather that happen then it not go off when I need it to.
