    Question for Charter Boat Tips

I've always given generous tips when fishing on a charter boat. What I have done is always give the tip to the captain assuming that he splits or otherwise gives a share to the mate. Is this the common way, or do most customers tip differently?

    Thanks,
    Tower Todd

Good question, and I'm looking forward to what others have to say. I have always assumed that the captain is who the charter goes to, so I tip the mate because I assume they don't get a piece of the charter.

IF YOU GO TO A RESTAURANT AND WISH TO LEAVE A TIP TO THE WAITRESS....DO YOU LOCATE THE OWNER OF THE REST' AND GIVE THE WAITRESS'ES TIP TO HIM TO BE PASSED ON TO THE PERSON MAKING LESS MONEY

The way it works on our boat is that it gets split between the Capt & the mate. But we run a 6 pack charter. For the bigger charters, I'm sure they will let you know how it works.

we always split our tips, regardless of who recieves it.it took the effort of the whole crew to make a good day, sotips get split evenly. On the Fightinglady, most of the time the mate and captain gets the same pay on charters.

I alwasy ask the charter to give it directly to my mate Jay. I also remind him that is why Jay is on the vessel all day and sometimes all night also. If Jay takes a hit I make up the difference from the charters payment as it's only the right thing to do. Great mates are the key to a good charter business...you betta take care of em or someone else will

Give it to the mate. Capt. is paid through the payment of the charter. Even though when we have a bad day its usually the MATES fault!
(kidding) The mate still needs to get paid....... And why were at it........ Why is it that English and black people don't tip? Never have understood that.

I have to agree with the fishskipper. Im not saying anything against any type of race, but his statement is completely true. I started working on charter boats at the age of 14. Head boats, inshore boats, offshore boats, its the same thing. The best is when they start to pass the hat, thats when you know your gonna get screwed. Luckily, I have always worked for good captains who would make up the difference or atleast approach the party. When I was working during the summers of high school on an inshore boat out of Md, my Captain would even call me the night before and tell me that it was my choice if I wanted to mate that day because the party was "special".

But, as we all know, your not in this game for the money, otherwise you wouldn't do it. Your not going to get rich being a mate or captain.

Personally, I would give the tip to the mate. Usually, if I do charter, I give a tip to the captain also because he is probably a good friend of mine and I know that he appreciates it.

Mate, or mates individually if that is the case. What if you have "special" mate. Do you have to tip him Just kidding of course.
