Puerta Vallarta Resort Experience?

I'm planning my honeymoon to Puerta Vallarta in September and looking at the Occidental Resort Allegro Nuevo Vallarta. From my online research and a couple reports it sounds good but I would really like to find out from someone with experience. How easy/hard would it be to make it over to Puerta Vallarta if I booked a charter boat for an early morning trip? Has anyone gone to a resort in the area that they would recommend? I'm fortunate that my betrothed is up for spending one day fishing; I want to make sure that we stay at a resort we can both enjoy for the entire week rather than a dive to sleep at between fishing as it will not be that kind of trip. I’m pretty early in my research and trying to stay to a reasonable budget (I’m paying for the wedding too) and what I can save on the resort I can spend toward a charter but don’t want to end up in a dump.
