    Public service announcement=Insurance

I got my bill today and noticed for the first time the disclaimer at the bottom that I am covered in all waters except offshore from Fernandina Beach, Florida to Brownsville. Texas. I called and they offer a short term attachment for a week or two for a few $. I had no idea that I was not covered when I fished a number of times in the afore mentioned area.Review your policies as you may not be covered either. To be covered in the area was about twice as much, go figure.

They never disclosed your navigational limits to you at the time coverage was bound?.....or did the company just change them?

you defin have a great point though...i run in to that all the time. I do believe the client should read everything...BUT the agent should make sure you are aware of your limits. Exclusions should be at the top of the list for the client to be made aware of! --- Insurance is confusing, and most of the time people just throw their policy in the basket with all the other junk mail......DO NOT DO THIS!! if you get a letter from your agent, read it! - they shoud call you with something important, but most agents use letters for records of correspondance.

I deal with 20 different marine insurance companies, and each policy has exclusions, conditions, and subject to....which is normal in the insurance world.

Navigational limits/exclusions are typical for all policies - its the agents job to find coverage for you that best suits your needs as a boater/fisherman! She/He should have asked you where you travel to, what your plans were so that there were no surprises --- what if you had a claim and it happened in that area?? your claim would have been denied b/c you were outside your navigational limits! --- sadly this happens all the time..agents who arent versed in the marine insurance industry write policies all the time that are so outrageous its mind boggling....or i will have a client who is ready to leave for a cheaper price not realizing they are basically spliting their coverage in half....or they arent even putting any coverage on their hull....

IMO you should have been made fully aware of that!! If it changed on renewal - call your client and make them aware! If it was always there you should have been made aware before you even signed the paperwork!

I'll speak for Jersey here - I just went through looking at other carriers.

She sent me a very straightforward chart that compared a number of Insurance companies. First was the overall rating of the carrier, The Limits to navigation, the Named Storm conditions (ie:haulout, plan, etc), Additional deductible for windstorms, etc.

    Very thorough and very concise.

Needless to say I made a change.

thanks fred - I was so happy when you kept asking question after question. It not only made me feel great as an agent, but 100% positive you knew what you were getting. haha - you actually made me do my job

Ej - I would read through your policy and double check everything...never assume. And if you have any questions, or your not quite sure what something means please let me know. No strings attached....just one SF.com member to another!
