    Pros/Cons of a Diesel Truck

OK, I'm kinda in the market for trading in my '05 2500HD 6.0ltr.gasser for a Duramax Diesel,my only problem is I don't know chit about diesels. And when I say that, meaning maintenence procedures and etc.like cost of operating one compared to a gasser. So anyone that runs a diesel that used to have a gasser of similar trucks i.e. ford/chevy how about giving me some insight on this. And BTW, MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT.

I love my oil burner no mistake about it. But, the cost of Maintence is NOT cheaper than a gasser. If you go with the Duramax (GM) you will bend over at th price of fuel filter. Ford & Mopar not so bad. Anyway, figurechanging fuel filter ever 10lk or so miles ( for me that's $30). Then oil changes. 10-12 qts. instead of 5.
And when the diesels do break---- bend over.
All in all though they are like night and day if you pull a load.
BTW, fuel savings really won't make up any difference due to the %&**(%&&^ premuim were are all paying on diesel fuel over Reg. gasoline nowadays.

90 dollars for the ford fuel filters
I dont think maintance is bad , I have been driving desiel trucks for many years. I love them, i dont have any trouble with gas trucks either but desiels seem to have run circles around all the gas trucks i have ever owned.

Have driven a diesel since my first car (diesel rabbit) and will never drive gas, other than my wife's car. Maintenance can be expensive, but it beats the alternative if its neglegted. The Powerstroke holds 5 gallons of oil so evry oil change is pricy, but you also don't need to change it for 5k miles. I have put 220k on a chevy diesel, 120k on a ford, then traded in for the same truck which currently has 61k on it and I plan on taking it to 250k

    Plus, chicks dig diesels.

the pro of a diesel is that when you tow something you will get the same mileage as you were when you werent towing anything.

If you can afford it, buy it. Hopefully, my next truck will be a Duramax.
BTW, there's one in the local paper (Carteret Times News) with 3000 miles on it and one of the area GMC or Chevy dealers had a special going (Morehead or New Bern). The price of diesel will be coming down, something about bringing online some changes in refining in 2007.

gassers hunt for gears and make towing torque in the upper rpm band.

oil burners make torque right off idle

My gasser was nice. My oil burner is a towing machine. Torque is there always. Always. But the question was about ford / chevy....sorry I drive the other one

I was in the same boat when I bought my dodge. never have owned a diesel nor maintained one.

best thing to do is join a diesel truck forum. they are just as informative as Sportfisherman.com

Put a load behind her and you'll see a change. My 25 Carolina drops me from 22 mpg down to 15-16 mpg, but that's still impressive lugging 10,000 lbs plus around.

Like every one else stated, diesels hold 4-5 gallons of oil depending on the make. Change every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Change your fuel filter and air filter every other oil change. You don't have to worry about a tune up or plugs with a diesel, other than that all the other maintenance is pretty much the same.
