Preventative maintenance against salt - gotta try this

Folks, I've gotta tell ya, I came across this product recently and tried it, and jeezem crow it works unbelievably well.

    The product is salt-away.

I have absolutely no relationship to the people who make this. I'm just passing along a great product recommendation. I originally used this to clean out & flush my skiff outboard when it be came clogged up and wouldn't let water discharge out the pee-hole. Based upon my success w/ that, then I decided to use it on my primary vessel. The saltaway works over time, about 24 hours. The more you use it the better the results. What it does is break down the salt build up and makes it so that it just washes away. Water alone will NOT perform the task that salt away does.

The mix ratio is very small - just a small amount of saltaway mixed w/ fresh water. At first, I just filled a small spray bottle. Now, what I do now, is I keep a 3 gallon bug sprayer on the boat. I spray down everything that's stainless or aluminum that's exposed to the weather.

Over the last week or so, I sprayed all the aluminum fitting inside the bilge area that feed the gas filters. There was a bunch of salt all over them a week ago. Today when I sprayed it again, the salt just dripped right off. This is the type of build up that normally you'd need to chip away at. I spray up and around the filters, anything that's metal and exposed to salt or mist. I spray the swivel rod holders, tuna rods & reels, spinning reels, jigging reels, aluminum rocket launchers, the T-Top, you name it. It takes me about 5 minutes after a general clean up to give the boat a good spray. But I'm telling you it's worth it. I wish I had come across this before my aluminum t-top got salt-pitted.

When you buy the saltaway, they also give you a hose fitting for connecting to your outboard so you can mix it when you flush it.

Good luck w/ it - it's a no-brainer from my perspective. Here is the company contact info. http://www.salt-away.com/ContactUs.htm#

If your a marine tackle shop you should stock this if you don't. Hope you have as good luck w/ it as I have.

I also use it to wash my boat. They have a special premeasure cup that attaches to your hose for that purpose.

    Great product!

I have used it before to wash the entire boat after a season of running offshore. Works real well but I think it also tends to strip/remove the wax.

it's our 8th season using Salt- Away
form our 30 foot diesel to our 18 foot C/C

use it for rinsing the entire vessel when a scrubbing is not needed

and in the fall when the diesel was not being used every day i would run fresh water thru the raw water system with the thermostat open and then run saltaway thru it and then shut off leaving the product in the system
you could see the scale come out a week later when firing it off !!!!

i run it thru my out board after every use and by the looks of the T stat and water pump the stuff works

    i have tried all sorts of applicators because the one that is supplied is fickle at best { The threads for the cup can cross so easy } + i{f you have high hose pressure you will blow it apart}

The applicators are the original Turtle wax applicators from way /way back in time .

so far this supplied applicator has been the best for us ,i use a straight plastic nozzzle .
and have found that it meters the best and is the easiest to control if the cup is in it's upright postion not horizontal with a trigger type nozzle

I spray it all over and even in the bilge area using the semi widest fan on the nozzle

it is a good idea to spray as much salt from the vessel with fresh water then salt away and final rinse .

and did i mention we use it on all our tackle in between full soapings with a mit

i have even soaked my reels at the end of the season after stripping all the line ,it is a great preventitive maintance before degreasing .

I have used salt X on a customers boat and i was not impressed with the results ,it seems to work but there is no foaming action so you really can't keep track of what area's have been hit .

I'm on a mooring, so a full fresh water rinse is mostly when I gas up. The bug sprayer w/ salt-away is my alternative to a hose. My boat holds 10 gal of fresh water, so I can always get the bug sprayer filled. The pressure from the bug sprayer also makes sure there's a good foam also.

Good to hear I'm not the only one singing the praises. Good stuff.

    Paul-

It's not suppose to strip the wax.......I used it all year this year and the wax job still looks good.

Huh. Maybe I am mistaken or maybe it was the Salt-X. I'll check with the rest of the crew.

    Thanks!
